Cougars run at Baker Street ends
Coolaroo have moved into outright second after defeating rivals University 7.13 (55) to 10.9 (69) on Friday night at Baker Street.
The 2013 Grand-Finalists traded blows in a see-sawing opening half with the Cougars taking a slender 1-point lead into the main break. The first half was marred however by consistent turn-overs from both sides, as each team struggled to adjust to the slippery conditions.
University were on able to manage two goals in the third quarter, as the Roo's turned up the heat and skipped out to 15-point buffer, kicking four of their own for the term.
The Navy Roo's seem to put the result within doubt in the first couple of minutes of the last stanza, kicking two quick goals to extend their lead to 27-points. University to their credit controlled the remainder of the final quarter, with numerous and inside 50's in their favour.
However, University had a case of the 'yips' in front of the goals, kicking 1.7 in a dominated display.
Coolaroo had already done the damage as Rhys Griggs and Luke Mason led the way for the reigning Premiers, with University naming outside midfielder, Garry Wade as the best Cougar in the loss.
In the weekends other Division 1 matches, Warwick stayed on top of the ladder and strengthened their premiership credentials with their 41-point victory of the Hawks in Goondiwindi.
After trailing by 8-points at the first break, the Redback's ran riot in the second quarter with a 9-goal to 2, term set up the victory. Donges and Quaife combined for 7-goals inside forward 50 with former Coomera Magpie Max Triffet named the Redback's best.
Highfields recorded their fourth win of the season with an away victory against Toowoomba. The Lions roared to a 34-point victory on the back of a bag of 6 goals by Miels Grice, which extended Grice's lead on the John Green leader board by to 15-goals with a season tally of 59.
Meanwhile South Toowoomba was comfortable winners by 99-points over Lockyer Valley at Heritage Oval. Bomber Alistair Poyner kicked 5-goals in a best of ground performance, while Peter Wein was judged the Demons best.
