Melbourne Victory’s assistant coach Jean-Paul de Marigny watched from the stands as Bayswater City comfortably beat Subiaco 5-0 at the WA Athletics Stadium ahead of City’s FFA Cup clash against the A-League side on August 20.

Bayswater coach Chris Coyne was unaware until after the game that de Marigny had flown in from Melbourne to watch his side.

“It’s pleasing that they’ve shown the respect to the competition and also to us as a club,” he said.

“The fact that they’ve come has shown the FFA Cup the respect it deserves. We’re pleased that we are playing Victory but we’ve just got to be concerned about ourselves.”

Bayswater led 2-0 at half-time without having scored a goal themselves, as both Brad McDonald and George Tchami put the ball into their own net.

The first came after only three minutes, as McDonald headed past his own keeper, before Tchami was unlucky to see the ball hit his thigh and go in following a well taken corner.

Bayswater striker Gustavo Giron Marulanda was the first Bayswater player on the score sheet as he came out firing at the start of the second half.

He set off down the wing before slotting the ball past the keeper from a tight angle to put his side 3-0 up.

The game was beyond doubt when Brian Farrell netted at the back post from Steve Burton’s cross-field pass.

Substitute Damien Catalano completed the scoring in stoppage time with a goal remarkably similar to Marulanda’s.

Subiaco had their chances in the first half, as Jordan Rhodes saw an effort canon off the crossbar from close range.

In the second half, Bayswater keeper Devon Spence got down well to make a reflex save from yet another Rhodes volley but Subiaco never looked likely to get something from the game.

Coyne felt his side, who won the Cool Ridge Cup last week, are in a good mental position for the remainder of the season.

“The boys seem in good form,” he said. “I just had to remind them today that the cup is dead and buried.

“Every game this year has been a cup final because we’ve been at the top and everyone wants to knock us off.”
