Young talent time
It was young talent time in the Premier Division competition with a number of young players getting their names up in lights. One team to benefit from an influx of NSW/ACT RAMS representatives was UNSW/ES. Abe Davis and Jordan Foote were brilliant as was Alex Foote (six goals) and Tom Dickson. Other youngsters to impress were Nick Shaw (St George), Harry Dobson (Sydney University) and Nick Foster (North Shore).
Sydney boys feature in VFL
While on youngsters making an impression, following on from the news about former UNSW/ES star’s Adam Gulden success in the SANFL, Danny went searching for other players who have sought opportunities in second-tier competitions.
Sam Tagliabue heads the list playing in Essendon’s VFL side on a consistent basis this year. Another UNSW/ES product, the 200cm+, 100kg+ hulk has played one-out in the ruck in his 12 games this year alongside names such as Kyle Hardingham, Travis Colyer and other players with AFL experience. He was best on ground against Box Hill earlier this month, and a week later registered 57 hitouts against Port Melbourne.
Former St George midfielder, Blake Guthrie has also tasted VFL action with Coburg. He has divided his season between the VFL and Development League.
You can see their statistics by clicking on their names. Well done lads!
D-Fence order of the day
You know Danny loves stats and this week had an inkling that defence has reigned supreme this year. Out of the last 25 Premier Division games, there have been only 11 scores over 100.
Western Suburbs have kicked the most goals in a match in that time with 21 goals against Sydney Hills.
The most goals in that time was by Adam Baker with 7 for UTS vs North Shore last week.
Gossip Corner
- Damon Collina has formally requested that the Bats committee look into Bats pre-game turtle neck skivvies for season 2015 and beyond. "A timeless fashion item that knows no bounds in style or comfort," Collina was quoted as saying.
- St George director of footy operations, Todd Sanderson, has taken up a career in singing or so it seems. The St George faithful all know there may have been a slight level of lip syncing occurring, but look out for him on The Voice next year.
- There is a bro-mance in the air between Levi Sands and identical brother Hugh McLean. They've been seen bonding together, and seem to have been lost on the field without their own blonde bombshell next to them. It's said Levi was like a horse without a jackeroo- lost with no guidance and inspiration.
- Which St George veteran supposedly had some "confusion" with a local cab driver on the weekend?
- Moorebank legend, Roy "The Pleasure Master" Simpson made his comeback from his 4th retirement this year against the Goannas much to the delight of Ian Prudham.
- Jerrimme 'Jez' Allsopp has been getting several possessions on and off the footy field. Word is he is the front runner to win the club’s prestigious Spirit of the Blues award.
Guthridge jets to victory
Nor-West key defender, Daniel Guthridge brought up the 100 game milestone last week with a narrow 10-point win over Sydney University. With his dad over from WA, he put on a show by running the wrong way twice and kicking the ball out on the full once. In all seriousness, Guthridge has been one of the rocks of the Jets defence in recent years commuting from the Eastern Suburbs to play and train on a weekly basis, and will be a vital cog of their charge towards a Division 3 premiership.
Zoppo comes out of the square
Injured Western Suburbs’ forward, Joshua Zoppo credentials as a runner seem to be in question. He was instructed by Kevin Eynaud to "put Reidy in the square." Instead of putting him in the goal square he was placed into the centre square by Zoppo. Later that game he was seen screaming messages 60 metres away from the selected player the message was for. Well done Zopp!

Charity the heart of community football
It has been great to see a number of club’s recently raising funds for worthwhile causes.
Manly-Warringah recently raised in excess of $8000 for the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute. It is worth acknowledging the teams participating and all sponsors, principally Commsec as jumper sponsor and the giver of gifts and assistance. A final special note to recognise Myles Duggan of LED Screens Australia who drove from Bathurst to provide the LED Screen used to effect during the day
Following on from the recent success of Ladies Day which was held in conjunction with Raise your (Pink) Socks which saw the Camden Cats Senior AFL donated approx. $2,000 towards the McGrath Foundation, Camden Cats AFL will host it’s inaugural Christmas in July, this Saturday 26 July 2014. All profits from Christmas in July will be donated to the Autism Family First Day Care Centre in Harrington Park.
Blues celebrate their success
On August 9, Campbelltown will be celebrating their 10, 15 and 20 year premiership reunion. Afterwards there will be a Gala Ball at the Campbelltown Catholic Club at 7pm. More details to come later, RSVP to the Campbelltown Monarch Blues Facebook Page or contact David Bowen by 2nd August.
There will be a bigger celebration if Campbelltown’s Reserves can make the finals. After losing all games last year and with six straight losses to start the year, you could be excused for putting a big fat black line through their season. To their credit and some would say the messiah, Simon David, they have since won six from their last eight matches to be an outside chance of finals action. See what our thoughts are of them making the finals in our Division Four Run Home article on Thursday.
