University closes in on ladder-leaders Warwick
UNIVERSITY has turned up the heat on AFL Darling Downs frontrunner Warwick with a come-from-behind 9.16 (70) to 8.9 (57) victory at USQ on Saturday night.
The Cougars have an intimidating record at their Baker St home ground but it was the visitors who had the better of the first half.
Warwick was up by two goals at the first change and still held an eight-point advantage at half-time despite an inaccurate second term.
But the Cougars clawed back in the third quarter to have the scores all tied up at 44-44.
Uni was wayward in front of goal in the last quarter but they still dominated Warwick to claim a 13-point victory.
Heath Gniel was the star with four goals for Uni.
The result keeps the Cougars in the hunt for the minor premiership along with second-placed Coolaroo who claimed an 18.18 (126) to 3.5 (23) victory over Highfields.
Coolaroo took some time to warm to the challenge after a sloppy 2.5 to 2.1 first quarter.
But the Roos were rampaging by the final term, booting eight goals while restricting Highfields to just the one minor score.
Coolaroo's Tom Rudolph was in fine touch with four goals while Phil Dreise kicked three.
In Saturday's other game, South Toowoomba overcame an early scare to down the Toowoomba Tigers 16.10 (106) to 4.9 (33) at Heritage Oval.
It's been a tough season for the Tigers but they showed they were up for a fight with a 3.2 to 3.2 opening quarter.
But the Tigers couldn't keep it up as Rob Lunney kicked five goals to inspire the Bombers to a runaway victory.
