Six of the regions most talented school footballers are heading to Sydney to contest the 2014 Australian School Sport National Championships.
Female footballers Chloe MacDonald, Jayne Finlay and Shaliese Law will be joined by fellow Darling Downs school students Will Shelton, Brock Aston and Brendan Shelton as the hexad of stars line up for Queensland in their respective age divisions/teams.
The star group will be in Sydney from July 19th to 26th up against the Nation’s best.
MacDonald, Finlay and Law were chosen from the Under 16 School-Girls State Championships on the Sunshine Coast at the start of May, while Shelton, Aston and Shelton were selected from the Under 15 School-Boys State Championships at Morningside AFC in Brisbane during late May.
All six players will be a part of the week long championships, hoping to bring back the National championship cup.
Chloe MacDonald
South Toowoomba Bombers Women's | Fairholme College
MacDonald is only new to Australian Rules in 2014, identified through the AFLQ Youth Girls school program; she was the standout for her school side Fairholme College. A hard running outside midfielder who doesn't mind going in to get her own footy, has been a standout for her club side South Toowoomba with 6 matches at in the AFL Darling Downs women's league.
Jayne Finlay
Dalby Swans | Dalby State High School
Another player in her first year of football, giving Australian Rules a go for the first time at the Under 16 Darling Downs trials, Finlay impressed from the get go. Medium size half forward or half back, Finlay's key attribute is her attack on the footy and ability to be one step ahead. With 5 matches to date in the AFLDD women's competition, Finlay is already a standout at just 16-years of age.
Shaleise Law
St Saviour's College
Shaleise doesn't currently play club football but has been a standout player since her debut outing with her school side three years previously. Her first carnival saw her awarded the school carnival MVP as a bottom age player and Law hasn't looked back since. Originally from Wondai, Law received the ultimate reward in Youth Girls footy this year and the first Darling Downs player to be awarded All Australian honours at the Under 18 Youth Girls Nationals at just 15 years of age.
Brendan Shelton
West Juniors | Toowoomba Christian College
The former Coolaroo junior and Darling Downs Crows Captain now plays for West Juniors in the AFL Brisbane Juniors McDonald's Cup and has taken his football to another level in 2014. Shelton boasts an intimidating frame for a 15 year old and has the ability to play either as a key position player or midfielder. Still attending Toowoomba Christian College, Shelton is one of the most talented footballers to come out of the Downs and is now showing his Brisbane opponents how country footballers go about their footy.
Brock Aston
West Juniors | Toowoomba Grammar
Aston is another Downs junior who is now applying his trade in the AFL Brisbane Juniors under 16 competitions and is one of the most dominating players at just 15. Aston's key attribute is his run and carry, along with his usage which is first class and well beyond his years. The former premiership player with Coolaroo is one of the hardest working players to come out of the Darling Downs and will be a key to Queensland's plans in Sydney.
Will Shelton
Toowoomba Grammar
He isn't related to fellow DD product Brendan Shelton but sports a very similar frame to that of Brendan. Shelton has moved up from traditional Australian Rules state in South Australia and currently attends Toowoomba Grammar school on a rugby union scholarship. His attack on the football is second to none and ability to win the contest in the air or at ground level is superb. It won't be long before AFLDD Division 1 teams come knocking for Shelton's services
