Canberra FC back in Championship Hunt

National Premier Leagues: Capital Football

Saturday 12th July 2014
Tuggeranong United 1 (Daniel Colbertaldo 81’) Canberra FC 3 (Adam Spaleta 23’, 42’, Alex Oloriegbe 32’)
Canberra FC entered a new era under the caretaker management of former Socceroo Andy Bernal by recording a 3-1 win over Tuggeranong United and moving to within striking distance of the top of the National Premier Leagues: Capital Football competition. Bernal handed a starting debut to 18-year-old Alex Tilley and 1-year-old Benjamin Van Meurs and the teenagers did not let his down, repaying the faith shown in them by putting in an excellent shift, particularly Van Meurs who looked born to play at the highest level. Canberra FC led 3-0 at the break having taken the match to United from the start but they were given a helping hand by some poor Tuggeranong defending. Adam Spaleta opened the scoring in the 23rd minute lashing home a superb low drive after a wonderfully fast-paced passing movement that included Alex Oloriegbe and James Field. And it was Oloriegbe who netted the second latching onto a misjudged back-pass from Cameron Doherty to skip around Rowan Shepherd and slot into the net from an acute angle for his eleventh league goal of the season making him the league’s leading scorer. Spaleta crashed home the third before half-time, via a deflection, and that was the points. Tuggeranong improved immeasurably after the break and pulled one back through a Daniel Colbertaldo volley, but they never looked like restoring any sort of parity.
