Well Footy Heads, another great round of footy in Ontario as the season and ladder is really starting to take shape. The Swans came to town and continued their winning form in Toronto this season while the Rebels rolled onto another win, as did the Hawks who were well undermanned.
Here is my review of #AFLOrd6 - no thanks to the 5 teams who did not provide any reports which makes choosing Best Player Awards very difficult!
Eagles 7.7.49 def Demons 3.5.23
What an interesting game of footy this one turned out to be on Friday night at Humber South! The quick starting Eagles were down at half time after 2.1 to 1.2 quarter and were held goalless in the second quarter as the Demons lead by 10 points at half time. If I were a betting man, which I am, I would have thought the Demons would roll on with this one but that isn't what happened at all.
After being held scoreless on more than one occasion in the third this season, the Eagles came out and kicked 3.2 to 0.1 in the third to take a 9 point lead into the final change. They then proceeded to kick another 2.2 goals n the final quarter to the Dees 0.2 - a complete turn around from the first 5 games of the season. This Phantom is impressed with the Eagles old boys.
Falcioni continued to kick goals with 3 yet hasn't learned to handball, while Butler and Marchese chipped in with 2 each. Koens, Marsh and Minaker were among their best, but it really was Matthew Bachinski who was best on for the Eagles from my mind. He has been dominating for them in the ruck lately.
The Dees had Walls kick 2 goals but were missing Casey and Sammutt from the line up along with Martin. Do they rely that heavily on one big red headed Irishman?
Phantom 0/1 to start Round 6.
Rebels 12.11.83 def Blues 9.4.58
The Rebels train continued its winning form with a 25 point victory over the Blues - yes I picked the correct winning margin, Footy Heads. A pretty hard fought affair, there was never much more than 10 points in it for the majority of the game.
That was until the final quarter when the Rebels kicked 5 goals to the Blues 2 and ran away with the victory. Looking at the scoring shots, it is safe to say that with some more accurate kicking this could have been a bigger win for the current top of table team.
The Blues were missing Daws but were still well serviced by Doc as usual with 4 goals and Corp with 2. Willsy was back in the mix, Chopper couldn't quite kick another 10 and the Bogucki was considered their best on.
The Rebels best was made up of the key Australians with the goal kickers being Murdoch and Prendergast with 3 each, Karavias, King and Bodnar with 2 each.
Phantom 1 from 2 + Margin - any bonus points?
Swans 15.7.97 def Dingos 8.8.56
The Swans travelled to Toronto for a the second week in a row and went home with the chocolates for a second week in a row with a big win over the Dingos. At half time, the game looked to be over with the Swans up by 40 odd points. But the Dingos came out in the third quarter and kicked 5 goals to 1 to bring the margin back to 16 points and it really looked like it was going to be game on.
But the Dingos were unable to keep up the intensity as the Swans came back out after a massive spray at 3 quarter time got them moving again and they ran away with another solid road win.
Stafford judged best on ground again with 2 goals, while Kozlowski kicked 4 and Shaughnessy provided plenty of run (and bounce) across half back.
The Dingos were still lacking targets up forward in the absence of Big Wade but Humphries managed to kick 2 goals for them and was judged their best on.
Phantom 2 from 3 in #AFLOrd6
Hawks 10.21.81 def Wildcats 3.6.24
The tough rebuilding season continued for the Wildcats who not only don't send in their match reports and best players but failed to post info on Sporting Pulse this week. They didn't quite have a full squad with only 18 players but certainly put up a fight against the Hawks who were missing a few to say the least.
Looks like a couple of old boys got a run on the weekend, including the coach as the Hawks missed Dullard, Killa, Stirling and both Shuttleworth's. Still an impressive showing from the boys from Broadview.
Phantom 3 from 4
Gargoyles 14.13.97 def Roos 10.8.68
The Roos hit the road for the first time this season and were under the pump early with only 15 players making the trip. As I said in my prediction, there's no love lost between the two sides and no doubt the Roos were unimpressed to not be playing 15 on 15. But the Gargoyles needed this victory big time and were stopping at nothing in getting it!
The first quarter was a tight one and the Roos were only down by 7 points but kicking into the breeze in the second quarter were held goalless and went into the half time break down by 5 goals. If not for some inaccurate kicking, this result really could have been worse for the Roos at the half.
With the breeze at their back in the 3rd the Roos were able to kick 7 goals to 2 in the third and led by a point at 3 quarter time! But after an almighty spray by Robbo, the Gargoyles came out in the last and kicked 5 goals to the Roos none in the last and ran out 29 point victors.
Phantom 4 from 5 to finish the round
2XU Player of the Round
Congratulations to this weeks 2XU Division 1 Player of The Round from the Toronto Eagles Matthew Bachinski. A little unlucky not to have won in round 5, with his strong play in the ruck. Again he proved he's a strong option in the middle for the Eagles controlling the taps and and around the ground. Congratulations Matty B!
Womens
First of all ladies, I am not sure where the mix up came from but m apologies nonetheless. I did my prediction for Demons v Roos Round 12 game first, which was moved to Thursday July 3. Then the Wildcats and Swans game in Mohawk Park. Per my tweets, I predicted the Swans to win in a close one. Here is my #AFLOrd6 (and 12) review.
Roos 5.13.43 def Demons 2.4.16
The Demons suffered there first "official" loss of the year on Thursday night at Humber in a game that was apparently rescheduled so that both teams could avoid playing during the International Cup. The Demons were missing Loughnane and were absolutely dominated as the Roos had triple the number of scoring shots to secure their 2nd win of the year. Trevean kicked 3 and Sylvie DeB kicked 2 in a game which could have turned out worse for the reigning Women's Premiers.
Cummings and Valatiis kicked goals for the Demons but it wasn't enough as they fell to the Roos for the first time in a long time.
Phantom 0 from 1 in Round "6".
Wildcats 3.5.23 def Swans 1.3.9
A pretty low scoring affair this was a hard fought game at Mohawk Park on Saturday afternoon. Clearly a long drive for the Swans, they lost their first game of the season even with the big guns of Dickinson, Sisters Legault and Constanza in the line up. Maybe the car ride was a bit tough on the ladies?
The Wildcats had all their best players in the line up and were primed for the take. With double the scoring shots it is no surprise they got the W.
Phantom 0 from 2 in #AFLOrd6 - looking forward to the rematch in Ottawa in Round 7
That's it for this week, Footy Heads! Back soon with my #AFLOrd7 preview! 'Til then!
