Frankston upset bayside neighbours
Frankston have claimed their second win for 2014 with a 21-point victory over Sandringham at Trevor Barker Beach Oval today.
After being so close to victory after leading at three quarter time in a number of matches this season, the Dolphins were able to hang on to get the four points and inflict the Zebras second defeat in the row.
After a tight opening term Sandringham took a 3-point advantage into the first break, but a commanding second quarter performance from Frankston saw them hold the home side goalless while they piled on four goals of their own.
Darren Minchington broke the scoring drought for Sandringham with a goal in the third term, but the Zebras were unable to chip into the lead established by the Dolphins, trading goals not enough to claw back the deficit.
For the winners Michael Lourey was a standout kicking four goals, while big man Khan Haretuku kicked two. Wade Lees, Scott Simpson, Ben Cavarra, Josh Tynan and Shane Hockey were also amongst Frankston best players.
Josh Bruce kicked two goals and was in the best for Sandringham along with Brodie Murdoch, and fellow St Kilda listed players Tom Simpkin and Clint Jones.
Roosters back on the winners list
After a string of defeats in the past weeks, North Ballart once again tasted victory with a resounding 40-point win over Northern Blues.
The temperature didn’t hit double figures at Eureka Stadium with the apparent temperature hovering around 5 degrees throughout the game. But it was the home side that ran hot with a flurry of goals late in the game to put the win beyond doubt.
After a close first half, the Roosters upped the ante with a ten goal second half performance. Liam Anthony (35 touches), Nick Rippon (30 touches) and Nick Peters (29 touches) all racking up the possessions and causing havoc for the Blues.
The Blues had plenty of scoring opportunities of their own, and 20 minutes into the final term were just 27-points down. But their inaccuracy kicking for goal dashed any hopes of a comeback, the Roosters controlling the ball in the dying minutes and running our comprehensive winners.
North Ballarat finished with ten individual goal scorers, Bryce Curnow the best booting four. Liam Anthony, Max Warren, and Sam Conroy among the Roosters best players.
Matthew Watson kicked three goals with Sam Cattapan the stand out player for the Blues leading the disposals count with 28.
Lions come oh so close
14th placed Coburg came agonisingly close to causing one of the biggest upset of the season against 4th placed Williamstown at Pirahna Park today. The Seagulls eventually running out 11-point winners in a thrilling match.
It took ten minutes for the first goal of the match to be scored through Williamstown’s Sean Tighe but Coburg was quick to respond. The tight goal for goal opening quarter saw nothing separating the teams at the first break.
Much of the same ensued in the second term until Williamstown opened up a 13-point lead midway through with back to back goals. The Lions replied through a Ben Wilson goal to bring the margin back to 8-points at halftime.
Jack Johnstone kicked two for the Seagulls in the third term, but again Coburg responded through Lech Featherstone and Ozgur Uysal to trail by just one point at the final break.
The home team hit the front early in the final quarter through Zak Saad, but it was the big game experience of Williamstown shone through. Adam Marcon stepped up kicking a crucial goal, while Jake Owen kept the scoreboard ticking over and extended the lead for Williamstown with two final term goals.
Coburg fought back with Saad kicking his third goal for the game, but time was against them, the final siren ending their gallant fight back.
Dylan Conway led the goal scoring for Williamstown with three, with Marcon, Peter Faulks and Ben Davies in the best.
Both Adam (32 disposals) and Zak Saad were among the best for Coburg, along with Usyal (31 disposals), Michael Hartley and Errol McConnell.
