The hosts kicked with the aid of a bitterly cold and blustery breeze blowing to the southern end of the ground and made the most of their opportunities kicking four first quarter goals to open up a 27 point lead at the first break.
After conceding three early goals Ellinbank started to settle and get some system in their game and second quarter goals by Brayden Weller and Bailey Beck reduced the margin to nine points at half time. The SEJ pushed their lead out 25 points at three quarter time before goals by Jason Cox in heavy traffic and Noah Gown, the later from a very tight angle whittled the margin back to 12 points with just over five minutes to go to set up an exciting finish. The visitors kept pressing hard but could only manage another three behinds and fell seven points short. Captain Noah Gown was a driving force in and around the middle all game and was awarded the coaches medallion at the after game presentation. He was lent terrific assistance by Bailey Beck, who ran hard and used the ball well in windy conditions as did wingman Trent McMahon. Chad Hall offered plenty rebound, Jason Cox was solid at both ends and ruckman Micah Bongiorno contributed some handy touches.
A big thank you to all the players who gave it their all, coach Daniel Crowley, his support staff, all the helpers and parents for ferrying your kids to training and to today’s game.
Final score: SEJ 6.8.44 defeated Ellinbank 4.13.37.
