THE Darling Downs schoolboys put in a strong showing at the Queensland School Sport Under-12 Australian Football Championships in Townsville during June.
The Downs boys finished the tournament with three wins and three losses after some fantastic performances by all 21 players. They kicked off the state championships with a come-from-behind victory over Capricornia 3.7 (25) to 2.1 (13).
Capricornia booted the first two majors of the game but were kept goal-less after quarter-time as the Downs boys stormed home.
Lockyer Valley’s Justus Liddicoat kicked three goals in their second game against Wide Bay but a slow start cost the Darling Downs as they were beaten 7.2 (44) to 4.4 (28). The Downs boys were behind by four goals at quarter-time and out-scored Wide Bay in every other quarter but it wasn’t enough to snatch a win.
Darling Downs suffered another close loss to an inaccurate Northern 3.8 (26) to 2.1 (13) before the powerhouse Peninsula outfit beat them 15.11 (101) to 1.3 (9).
But the Downs boys finished on a high with a 5.3 (33) to 4.5 (29) win over the Presidents team and a 5.4 (34) to 4.7 (31) victory over Cape York.
Rising star Coolaroo footballer Will Taskers was named the Most Valuable Player for the Darling Downs. The School-boys captain was the standout performer throughout the Championships, with his ability to win the contested ball along with his stoppage clearance work second to none.
Will along with Jonty MacDougall (University AFC) and Kirby Morunga (Warwick AFC) selected in the Queensland Country side to play against Sunshine Coast on the final day of the championships.
The Queensland Country side is made up of 22 of the very best players from the Country division of the Championships, an outstanding feat for the three Darling Downs boys.
