At the tender age of 18, Billy Cox is a veteran of many a campaign.
Billy is Seymour’s nomination for the Mooroopna Golf Club Rising Star Award which will be announced at the Morrison Medal count at the end of the season.
The son of Paul and Kim Cox of Seymour is a veteran beyond his years with more than 130 games to his credit.
Is it any wonder, the likeable young man is a Lion through and through with his dad having played more than 150 games with the Lions in the ‘90s, coached the club on two occasions and was president in 2003?
Paul was a member of the victorious GVFL side in 1994 which was coached by Graeme Weatherley and involved some of the best footballers to pull on the purple and gold jumper.
His grandfather, Mark, played with Echuca in the Bendigo League in the ‘60s and was president for five years at Seymour.
His mother is an A grade netball best and fairest winner and his 20-year-old sister Demi last season’s B Reserve best and fairest while Billy was the Lions thirds best and fairest.
Billy’s first best and fairest came at eight when playing for Greenvale in the under 10’s followed by another playing for Port Douglas and yet another club best with St Mary’s in the Seymour Junior Football League while runner up in the league.
He played with the Bushrangers in under 15 and 16 but dropped out in under 18’s when he lost interest but debuted with the Lions seniors while last season he was a member of the GVFL under 18 country championship side which was victorious at Geelong.
This season he played four senior games and was in the best twice before rupturing ligaments in his ankle which are still healing, hopefully recovering before the end of the season, otherwise it could be surgery if they don’t heal.
Billy is in his third year as an electrical apprentice and looking forward to playing many more games for the Lions.
