Gippsland League club Wonthaggi successfully hosted AFL Victoria Country’s Victorian Work Cover Authority Game of the Month on Sunday, July 27.
The Power celebrated the occasion by defeating Moe by 67 points at Wonthaggi Recreation Reserve.
Gippsland product and Hawthorn champion Peter Knights presented the cup and was guest speaker at a luncheon prior to the senior game.
Knights addressed about 120 people and spoke about the importance of life members and volunteers to community football clubs, as well as his decorated 264-game career at Hawthorn.
Knights also said it was the biggest crowd he had seen at a VWA game.
Wonthaggi president Brett Tessari said it was great to have Knights involved and the day was a great success.
‘‘It turned a normal game into one of our better ones,’’ Tessari said.
‘‘Years ago we were involved in a game at Maffra, but this is the first time we’ve hosted a Game of the Month and it’s definitely something we would do again.’’
AFL Gippsland football development manager Chelsea Caple praised the host club Wonthaggi for its work prior to and on the day.
‘‘It was good to see so many members of the community there,’’ Caple said.
‘‘There was a jumping castle and face painting and the juniors played in the morning, so there was a real family atmosphere about the day.’’
