Revenge in the air for Southern Derby

Cockburn City skipper Paul Natale believes this weekend’s Rivalry Round match against Armadale will be a feisty affair after controversy the last time the teams met.

City and Armadale will meet in a National Premier Leagues WA match at Alfred Skeet Oval on Saturday (kick-off 3pm) aiming to get their respective seasons back on track.

Natale expected Armadale to come out firing after Cockburn’s 5-1 win in their last meeting in May.

“There is a rivalry there because there’s only two southern clubs in the league and it’s us and them,” Natale said. “And the last time we played they had a player (Alec Solomons) sent off and they felt it was an injustice, so they’ll be looking to get one back on us.”

Solomons had earlier scored an equaliser for Armadale following Blake Adams’ opener and it looked like being a close game.

But when Solomons was sent off, to the disbelief of Armadale coach Lee Bamber, Cockburn made the most of their numerical advantage with a hat-trick from Devon Gibson and another goal from Liam Murray.

Armadale defender Billy Quinncroft, who was suspended for their last meeting, said the bitter defeat last time had not been forgotten but the team’s motivation ran deeper than settling old scores.

“We definitely want to get out of the bottom two and try and get a good few wins under our belt,” he said. “We want to improve and finish on a positive.

“We are struggling for someone to score goals but we have to give kids chances and hopefully one of them will come through.”
