The Round 8 AFL Sydney Women's Rising Star nominee is Ashleigh Carter from Manly Warringah.
At 16 years old, Ash is in her first year of AFL after 11 years of soccer and 9 years of athletics. Ash is a freak of nature. One of those lucky people born with natural athletic skills and coordination, giving her the ability to succeed in any sporting activity.
Her maturity and commitment to the team far exceeds her coach, Sam Engel expectations. Engel often has to pinch herself and be reminded of just how young she is.
Ash is affectionately referred to by her team mates as ‘legs’ due to her enormous leap. Ash is quite a tall girl already, but when she jumps, she is a clear half body above her opponent.
On the weekend, Ash starred for the Giants, gathering multiple possessions and taking some high quality marks. She worked tirelessly in the ruck, giving her teammates first use of the ball.
If Ash sticks with AFL, she will have a very successful career. She polls every week in the BOG votes as well as player’s player. Engel is very excited to be nominating Ash this year – a true gem, new to the game, and learning it all very quickly.
