The clash between Casey Scorpions and Box Hill Hawks this Saturday on ABC TV brings together two teams experiencing different form lines.
The Box Hill Hawks are flying high after their elevation up to top spot after a win against fellow top eight side Williamstown, while the Casey will be looking to end its recent form slump with an upset at Casey Fields. Alysia Thomas-Sam previews the game.
Resting on the 13th rung of the VFL ladder, the Scorpions have a point to prove in the competition – and what better way to do it than against the reigning premiers. Although they fell 20 points short of the Roosters last weekend, the scoreboard pressure they exerted was immense as they racked up nine separate goal kickers.
Alex Georgiou and Viv Michie were impressive with their effective passes and efficiency with the ball, but unfortunately the Scorpions fell prey to the same final quarter blitz that was inflicted upon the Hawks against the Roosters. They coughed up their 11-point lead going into the final term and couldn’t match the Roosters when it counted most.
But, the Hawks must have learnt from their lesson.
The Seagulls were matching the Hawks intensity every quarter of play last Saturday, except for the fourth. In the last five minutes of action, the Hawks capitalised on the fatigue of their visitors and booted goal after goal to end the day with a 21-point victory.
Dallas Willsmore produced one of his best games for the Hawks with 4 goals, while Alex Woodward and Sam Iles commanded play in Box Hill’s favour.
Although the Hawks and the Scorpions have defeats by North Ballarat in common, this may be the only similarity both squads hold of one another this season.
It seems if Casey can learn from their match against the Roosters – in the same fashion the Hawks did – they have the history and power to win the four points at home this weekend.
However, with the physical aptitude Box Hill displayed against the Seagulls last Saturday and the talent being exercised consistently in the likes of Luke Lowden and Mitch Hallahan who will hit the field tomorrow – it’s difficult to imagine Casey overcoming them, even at home.
