Youthful Army up for the fight

Armadale defender Billy Quinncroft says the club will continue to battle to rise away from the lower rungs of the National Premier Leagues WA at the same time as looking towards the longer term future.

Army have not won since a round two victory over Subiaco and sit second from bottom on the 10-team table.

Last weekend’s 1-0 loss in the reverse fixture against rock-bottom Subiaco was a bitter blow for Armadale that could spark the Alfred Skeet Reserve club into action against high-flying Balcatta at Grindleford Reserve tomorrow.

Quinncroft certainly feels Armadale have much more to offer over the remaining nine weeks of the season.

“We definitely want to get out of the bottom two and try and get a good few wins under our belt,” he said. “We want to improve and finish on a positive. We’ve definitely got youth coming through and we’re looking towards next season as well.”

Quinncroft said the team had lacked a cutting edge but he hoped the younger players would learn from the experience.

“Apart from Perth Glory, we’re probably the youngest team in the league,” he said. “We worked out our average age is 20.8, which is quite young especially in a senior competition.

“We are struggling for someone to score goals but we have to give kids chances and hopefully one of them will come through.”

Third-placed Balcatta have been in fine form with important victories over Sorrento and Bayswater in an eight-game period in which they have lost just once.

Saturday: Balcatta v Armadale (Grindleford Reserve, 3pm); Inglewood United v Bayswater City (Intiga Stadium 3pm); ECU Joondalup v Floreat Athena (ECU Football Arena 3pm); Stirling Lions v Perth Glory (Macedonia Park 3pm); Subiaco AFC v Cockburn City (WA Athletics Stadium 3pm).
Sunday: Perth v Sorrento (Dorrien Gardens 3pm).
