Longwood will be desperate to climb off the bottom of the ladder when it plays host to Girgarre in what looms at the Kyabram District Football Netball League match of the round. The Redlegs went close to chalking up win number two at Ardmona last week but gave up a three goal lead to slip to a five point defeat.
If they can continue to replicate the football they have played in the past few weeks they will fancy their chances against the visiting Kangaroos.
Girgarre coach Mark Patten will be hoping his team can deliver four consistent scoring quarters. Last week, the Roos went scoreless in two of the four quarters.
Ryan Jones, Zane Johnstone, Ricki Thompson, Michael Walsh, Ashley Hughes and Brad Canny will be the pivotal players if the Roos are going to kick a winning score.
For Longwood, the key players will be Leigh Hughes, Liam Sabri, Tim Naughton, Rodney Moreen, Dylan Kerinaiua and William Murray.
Lancaster will be extremely keen to end a run of losses when it travels to play Avenel. The Wombats have only won one of their past four games and coach Paul Burnett will be searching for answers to get the team back on track.
The Wombats were picked by many experts as one of the teams most likely to figure in the top six and Burnett would be the first to admit that the team is not playing well enough to be considered a top six team at present.
Another loss to Avenel and the Wombats will be locked in a real fight to figure in the finals.
They have a reasonably favourable second half draw but Burnett will take nothing for granted, especially after losing at home to Violet Town last weekend.
Zachary Cerrone, Daniel Clarke, Thomas Davies, Aaron Gill, Nicholas Bertoli and Corey Hird have been the club’s consistent performers, but to win this game they will need an even contribution from all 21 players that take the park.
Avenel has been in really good form of late and the Cameron Gillett coached Swans will be searching for a fourth successive win when they host the Wombats.
Michael Morgan, Todd Heaysman, Jeremy Meek, Donald Stirling, Joshua Mc Donald and Callum Williams were the shining lights in the Swans away win last week and will again be looked on to figure prominently.
Undera will have a battle to retain its place in the top six when it travels to take on ladder leader Stanhope. Stanhope has been outstanding in 2014 and after wins against Lancaster, Merrigum, Avenel and Murchison it deserves to be on top of the ladder. Undera has been very good in beating all the teams around it. It needs to claim a big scalp to be considered a genuine chance of playing finals.
Under Hooda Gray Stanhope is one of the fittest teams in the competition and runs out games very well. Some of the key players who will be vital to ensure the winning form continues for Stanhope are
Tim Somerville, Jye Patten, Thomas Hepburn, Shaun Pearce, Zachary Treacy and Klint Wagstaff.
Some of Undera’s really consistent performers this year have been Carl Bruinier, Luke McCluskey, Jon Valentine and Brenton Campbell. If they can get an even contribution for all 21 players then the Lions will be a chance of an upset.
Murchison are clocking up the wins without setting the world on fire. They take on Ardmona and the Cats will be looking to give a good account of themselves. They will use the confidence gained from last week’s come-from-behind win to motivate them against the reigning premier.
James Milne, Christopher Cullinan, Ash Matthes, Luke Chapman, Stephen Burns and Marcus Cook were the shining lights in the win against the Tigers while Luke Kenny, Brent Ralph, Scott Lambden, Luke Trevena, Andrew Ralph and Thomas Durward were some of the star performers in the thrilling win against the Redlegs.
They will need to fire along with making sure every player plays their role against the all-conquering Grasshoppers.
In the remaining two games, Merrigum will be out to make amends for its home loss to Stanhope when it travels to take on Violet Town while Nagambie will be out to keep pace with Stanhope by accounting for Rushworth.
My tips: Nagambie, Merrigum, Murchison, Stanhope, Avenel and Girgarre.
