He’s the son of a gun.
Charlie Morrison is the Benalla Football Club’s nomination for the Mooroopna Golf Club’s Rising Star Award for season 2014.
The son of Darby and Tanya Morrison started out playing footy in the sevens and eights in Auskick with Darby coaching while he would tag along when his dad was coaching Benalla All Blacks and playing in the Saints reserves.
Darby wasn’t always in the reserves by the way and was a member of the 1990 Euroa premiership side and the 1991 Port Douglas Crocodiles which won the Cairns Football League premiership and one of the league’s best defenders.
Charlie played in the Benalla B Division (under 12’s), A Reserve (under 14’s) and A Division (under 16’2) winning the grand final in B Division in 2007.
He has always played as a forward and on Saturday kicked five against Shepparton United to take his tally for the season to 15.
Last season was his first in GVFL playing for the Saints Thirds who lost the grand final to Kyabram, while he was award the best team player for the Saints.
This season Charlie has been moved around the ground by coach, Wally Armstrong, and hopes to go one better than last season because he knows what losing a grand final is like and he doesn’t want to experience that feeling again.
Today the Saints come up against another side with premiership aspirations when they take on Mooroopna.
Charlie is currently doing year 12 at FCJ College in Benalla while doing a school based apprenticeship in sign writing.
“I will be continuing this job full time when I finish school while continuing to play footy hopefully (getting) a few senior games this year and playing seniors next year, if possible, with hard work and dedication, “Charlie said.
He is not the only Morrison playing thirds for the Saints with 15-year-old brother Harry showing plenty of promise, having played Bushies last year and with Victorian Country.
