Sorrento back to winning ways
Report by Aisling Lawless
Super-subs Reece Vittiglia and Sean Canham gave Sorrento a two-goal lead over Inglewood United in a thrilling game at Percy Doyle Reserve yesterday afternoon.
Canham added to goals from Jason Mirco and Brodie Martin in the 4-2 score line, bringing his season tally to nine, but said being the leading scorer hasn’t added any pressure.
“A lot of people in the team are scoring so it’s nice that everyone has created a lot of chances and we share it around,” Canham said.
“We seem to be coming from behind quite a lot, but we showed spirit in coming back and finishing strong for the win today.”
Shane Pickering and Ryan Clarke both put Inglewood on the scoreboard in the first half but the visitors failed to capitalise on their other chances.
It was an important win for Sorrento after last week’s shock 5 -0 loss to Balcatta.
Co-coach Jamie Harnwell said maintaining consistency is the biggest hurdle they have to conquer.
“I asked for a response from the boys after last week’s defeat,” he said.
“We are still conceding goals, which we’ve got to continue to work on but I’m really proud of all the boys today.”
Inglewood gained an early lead when joint leading NPL WA scorer Clarke got his tenth goal, sending the ball comfortably past Curtis Aspden after a great run down the left wing.
But Sorrento’s physical presence up front kept Inglewood on guard as they worked their way around the penalty box.
Keeper Luke Martino was unchallenged until a counter attack in the 37th minute when Martin opened the scoring for Sorrento, slotting the ball into the bottom of the net from a Harnwell pass.
The goal spurred Inglewood on and the pace of Teeboy Kamara and David Sesay on the wings combined well with Clarke to create threatening attacking options.
Three minutes later they regained their lead when Steve McDonald brought down Sesay on the edge of the box. Greg Sharland’s resulting free kick sailed beautifully onto the head of Shane Pickering, who sent it into the net.
Just four minutes after the restart Sorrento came back again, Kilkenny’s pass across the box setting up Mirco for the goal he had been hunting for in the first half.
Vittigila scored four minutes after his substitution, getting on the end of a pass across the face of the goal.
Sorrento wrapped up the game in the 77th minute when Canham found himself in space in front of the goal and there was never any doubt he was going to put the ball away.
A triple substitution in the 82nd minute revived Inglewood’s spark, but coach Graham Normanton’s hope fresh legs would bring the game back for them proved to be unfounded.
“We didn’t deserve to win that’s for sure,” Normanton said.
“But we are disappointed we have gotten off the unbeaten run.”
He said failing to capitalise on opportunities has contributed to their failure to win their few last matches.
“It’s something I need to have real good hard look at to see what we need to get back on the bike.”
