Sandringham and Collingwood enter their Round 10 contest with differing form lines, as Nick Ciantar reports.
Sandringham’s losing streak continued last weekend with a 12-point defeat against the Northern Blues. A number of St Kilda players including David Armitage, James Gwilt and Jimmy Webster had pivotal roles in the tight loss. The Zebras challenged all afternoon but the Blues were too strong in the midfield.
On the other hand, Collingwood defeated the Casey Scorpions by six points in a nail biter. “World Cup” hopeful Caolan Mooney soccered through the match winning goal late in the last term, after the Pies trailed by three points at three quarter time.
Former SANFL player Mat Suckling debuted for the Pies and was best on ground while Ben Kennedy, Jake Williams and Jack Hellier also impressed.
The Pies moved into the top four after that victory, while the Zebras slumped to seventh on the ladder with their third straight defeat.
Collingwood was too powerful the last time these two sides met and this is a must win for Sandringham after such a fantastic start to the season.
2012 Sandringham Best and Fairest winner Tom Curren returns to the team and is a massive inclusion. Curren has had a tagging role with St Kilda this year and his ideal match-up could be Taylor Adams, who has been in and out of the AFL team.
Rhys Stanley will again partner up with Beau Maister as the tall forwards while the club’s leading goal kicker, Trent Dennis-Lane, will return from injury.
Adam Cockie could go head-to-head against Collingwood premiership player Luke Ball, if Ball is not selected in the final 22 for the AFL team.
Ben Reid will play his second game back from injury and he will be instrumental for the Collingwood forward line. Kennedy and Kyle Martin will look at continuing their impressive form at half-forward, while Tony Armstrong and Martin Clarke will control defence.
Ruckman Jarrod Witts will be challenged by talented Sandringham duo Jason Holmes and Lewis Pierce. Both teams will look to assert dominance in this area as both sides boast strong midfielders and strong-marking forwards.
