Multi-talented young sportsman Kyle Mueller is this week’s Mooroopna Golf Club Gotafe Goulburn Valley Football League’s Rising Star nomination.
The Kyabam P-12 Year 11 student made a conspicuous debut with the Bombers in this season’s opening round game against Tatura, snaring two goals and feeding off a couple of others to teammates. He also performed well in his second game against Rochester and stepped up another rung against Echuca in the third game of the season with midfield and forward pockets assignments.
A mobile, middle-sized left-footer with good skills and determination he made his debut for the Bendigo Pioneers against the North East at Craigeburn on May 3 and said he was reasonably happy with his debut in what were trying weather conditions.
The son of former Bombers hardman defender and Kyabram cricket legend Brad Mueller, Kyle was promoted early in the season into of last season’s Paul Newman coached Kyabram thirds premiership side although he was still eligible for Under 16s. He still as another season left at GVL thirds and TAC cup level.
Kyle said the extra physicality and the pace of senior football were two things he has had to come to grips with in the elevation of standard.
‘‘You have to be ready to react a lot quicker at senior level and be prepared to take a few more hard bumps,’’ he said.
But Kyle said he derives a big thrill and great satisfaction out of playing senior football for his town and also at TAC Cup level.
‘’It’s a real honour to play for your home town club and also playing with my heroes like Paul (Newman) and Afro (Chris Atkins) who I went to see when I was younger,’’ he said.
Kyle is also a gifted young cricketer.
At 14 years of age he became the youngest player ever to play in a senior Kyabram District Cricket Association grand final with the Kyabram Cricket Club in 2010-11. He also became the youngster player in that year to ever represent the KDCA at Melbourne Country Week. An aggressive top order batsman he also captained the Victorian Under 13 cricket side in the National Championships in Toowoomba in 2009 when he scored the most runs for the carnival of all competing States.
He also spent most of last season and part of this season playing with Carlton Cricket Club thirds, but found the travel and mixing cricket and training with the Bendigo Pioneers too demanding and returned to play cricket with Kyabram in the Cricket Shepparton’s Haisman Shield competition .
Now 17, he is dividing his interests between football and cricket and said he is quite content at the moment to continue juggling his football and cricket careers and see what the future brings.
