Memorable Experience for Green Shirts
Thursday, May 15, 2014
Last week the AFL celebrated everything that is great about umpiring local footy by holding Community Umpiring Round.
The week included multiple activities that aimed to promote the many benefits that umpiring Australian Football can provide. One of those activities was when green shirt umpires were invited to lead out the AFL umpires in all matches nationally. As an added bonus, the young umpires had the thrill of lifting the ball to sound the siren as the umpiring team entered the ground.
Umpiring groups represented during these activities were Essendon District Football League (VIC), Geelong Football Umpires League (VIC), Metro South Junior Football League (SA), Combined Southern Leagues Football Umpires Panel (SA), Metro West Junior Football League (SA), North East Metro Junior FA (SA), Claremont District Umpires (WA), AFL Brisbane Juniors (QLD), AFL Canberra Umpires (ACT), Gippsland Umpires Association (VIC), South East Juniors (VIC) and Western Region (VIC).
The young umpires involved in the activity couldn’t hide their excitement and the AFL umpires really enjoyed having them on board for the match. Former AFL Umpires Coach Rowan Sawers, who was escorting the Essendon District group, was ecstatic about the opportunity for his young charges. He suggested that this once in a lifetime opportunity should be shared around multiple umpiring groups so everyone can have the chance to be out there.
The AFL Umpiring Department wishes to thank the State Umpiring Development Managers for coordinating the nominations and the AFL umpires for their support of the concept.
