Williamstown has jumped into fourth spot on the VFL ladder after a commanding second half against Frankston, defeating the Dolphins by 56 points on Sunday.
Ryan Ferguson was the star kicking six goals against his previous side, with his dominant performance up forward earning him man of the match honours, after a young and inexperienced Frankston side dropped off after half time, as Dale Fenney and Anthony Stanguts report.
Frankston started strongly with big men Khan Haretuku and Michael Lourey getting the home side on the board early.
Leading by 11 points at quarter time, Lourey was able to extend the lead early in the second term with consecutive goals to grab his third as Frankston had the advantage. Williamstown fought back kicking four straight goals to head in to half time with the lead by three points.
Despite Frankston hitting the lead early in the third term, once again Williamstown finished the quarter strongly kicking four late goals to produce a lead of 20 points, that was going to test the home side going into the last.
The visitors took every opportunity is the last quarter to run out the game strongly, kicking six unanswered goals – adding to their four unanswered goals to end the third term – to boost their percentage. Frankston got there only goal of the quarter from Shannon Taylor which ended Williamstown’s momentum of ten goals.
Williamstown’s coach Andrew Collins was very happy with his sides’ effort after the game.
“To come down here and to win like we did after our first quarter was an outstanding effort by our boys.”
Collins praised the performance of Ferguson, joking that the defender come forward is getting better with age.
“Yes he is getting better and better, just imagine what his going to be like when he is 36 years of age.
“He is our equivalent to the Dustin Fletcher and has been an outstanding footballer and continues to perform at a high quality level as a VFL footballer.”
Frankston coach Simon Goosey was pleased with the first half but was disappointed that his young team was outplayed and outrun in the end.
“That effort (in the first hal) was very pleasing and probably the thing that stands out for me is how young we are.
“We’ve got ten blokes that have played under ten games and you get that drop off after half time which unfortunately happens.”
Frankston still looking for their first win of the year as they travel to Ballarat to take on North Ballarat next week, while Williamstown travel back home to take on Geelong in the ABC TV game.
