WOW WEE Round 4 kicked off with Melbourne’s weather at its finest. The under 9s braved the conditions for a great day at their lighting premiership out at Kilsyth, the under 10s travelled to the wettest suburb in Melbourne - Mulgrave, the under 12s went to Lysterfield while the under 11s, 14s and 17s (and their respective opponents) all enjoyed playing at the MCG of the East - Walker Park. Wouldn’t have even known it rained with the ground holding up a treat and surprize surprize the grand stand was full of rugged up parents while the kids slogged it out in the pouring rain

Under 9's
The boys travelled to Kilsyth this week for their Lightning Premiership round at Pinks Reserve. They played four games with tough competition of Blackburn Reds, STH Croydon, Kilsyth Blacks and Wantirna STH Green though weren’t able to come out with a win. The opposition wasn’t the only challenge for the under 9’s as they were up against very cold wet and wild conditions. I’m very proud of the boys as goals were scored in each match. I really appreciate the great effort the parents made by sticking to our well organised roster put together by our team manager Kathy. A great bonding experience it was for the under 9’s who stood out in their yellow & black and made Mitcham proud. GO TIGERS!
Under 10’s
The u10s travelled out to Mulgrave to take on the lightning premiership premiers so it was always going to be a challenging game. Unfortunately we didn't get off to a good start in terms of personnel with Preston having to retire early in the 1st qtr with a sore knee. The game started off quite even until Glen Waverley found some momentum that was very difficult to stop slamming on 8 first half goals and keeping us scoreless. However it wasn't all bad, there were some great signs and passages of play in the first half. Jamie C was winning plenty of the ball, Jamie B, Dan N and Jasper were laying some relentless tackles, Nathan and Sasha's second and third efforts kept the pressure on and Jack and Luca were working tirelessly to drive the ball forward to give Mason every opportunity to win the ball which he did on well. We also had some fantastic ball movement through the middle all starting with Damon in the ruck who gave his all against a bigger opponent but Damo never gave up. One of our captains Mick gave some nice little passes through the middle of the ground, while our other capt. Loal was taking some strong marks and provided some well needed drive. Our second half saw a massive improvement, we committed to hunting the ball in packs that saw us being a lot more competitive losing the half 4 goals to 1. The goal kicked by Denzell is the current goal of the year leader with a beautiful running snap from the pocket. Our pack hunting changed the momentum of the game and started to make Glen Waverley second guess their efforts. Liam laying a ripper bump, Matteo strong as ever bursting packs and taking strong marks, Josh winning plenty of footy with his hard at it attitude, Dan T getting his little legs running again, Mac holding down full back to stem the tide, Thomas running everywhere and staying tight on his player, Boothy had some beautiful link up play through the middle with a couple of precise handballs, Nick providing some well needed drive out of the middle and Will was as always making his presence known...Well done boys!
Under 11s
It was an icy, windy and wet morning for football this Sunday. The U11’s faced an under manned Boronia, which gave Mitcham the upper hand with free players on the field and an interchange large enough to help players recover. Maybe it was the wet weather, but the game was not a free flowing affair. It was Jamie Ross who got the Tigers under way late in the first quarter with a wonderful snapshot. Ethan Miller backed this up in the 2nd with a goal, showing real composure. The 2nd and 3rd quarters were low scoring as the tigers struggled to control a determined Boronia. Congratulations to Sam Agius for getting his first goal this season whilst Joel Michaelson has backed up a second week with 2 goals. For the statistically minded, interesting to note this is the second game where we have failed to score in the third quarter. All in all a must win game was achieved for the team in order to keep that winning feeling.
Final Score Mitcham 5 – 7 – 37 d Boronia 3 – 2 - 20
Under 12s
The under 12s played Lysterfield away. In the first half the boys seemed to lack a bit of intensity but our ability to drive the ball forward at times was promising. The boys dragged themselves in front into the last but a couple of defensive lapses saw a couple of good snap goals from the opposition seal the win for Lysterfield.
Julian was again dominant in the ruck most of the game. It was good to see Elijah back who was also handy in the Ruck. Luke B, Corey and Harry provided a lot of drive throughout the day and Lincoln worked hard in the middle. Danny, Bailey and Noah were all handy at times up forward. Also welcome to our newest tiger Kyle - good first game. Ultimately it was a day of missed opportunities as we didn’t work hard enough early and there were a number of shots on goal that we could have capitalized on. Disappointing to be in it so close to the end and get beaten but the boys should be proud of their efforts. Go tigers.
Final Score Lysterfield 7.6.48 def Mitcham 4.5.29
Under 14’s
Terrible weather conditions meant we had to alter our style a little bit and play "small ball" for a lot of the day with most of our score coming from run and carry passages of play and stoppages giving our forwards first opportunity to put scoreboard pressure on. I was particularly pleased with our defensive effort again today keeping Wanny Sth to just one behind. This has been the trend so far this season and a goal of ours to stifle opposition forward lines. We have had a great start to the year but know we can't get by on talent alone and must work harder to continually get better.
Good start boys!!
Final Score Mitcham 20.25.145 d Wantirna South 0.1.1
Under 17’s
The under 17s played Waverley Blues @ home and although the rain was on and off all day the beauty of playing at the MCG of the East is there is NO mud. It became very obvious early that the under 17s had run into a side that had come to play and coach Gavin Ward said after the game that “some of our boys got a reality check today, make no mistake Waverley Blues were good and deserved the Victory but The bottom line is you learn more about the playing group when you lose than when you win and this week’s result shows we still have plenty of work to do.
Well done to Bobby Burden and Sam Brindley who both played their 100th games this week and while we didn’t get the result we were after it takes nothing way from being able to play 100 games of junior footy - WELL DONE BOYS
Final Score Mitcham 6 - 8 - 44 lost to Waverley Blues 9 - 4 58
