While Georgie Seaniger and Belle Baldock will be putting on the Queensland jersey another Darling Downs female footballer will be pulling on a different jersey but at the same championships.
Shaleise Law will be the third Darling Downs footballer at the National Championships in Canberra as Law is set to ignite the Champs with the Woomera's side.
The Woomera's side was selected from a vibrant nine a side carnival for Aboriginal girls which is not yet in mainstream State programs, proved to be an exciting addition to the female pathway. Shaleise was a standout for the Queensland kick-start side.
It will be an exciting experience for the Grade 11 St Saviour's student who is not only debuting at the Nationals but will also have first class coaching by three-time Brisbane Lions premiership defender Chris Johnson. Law is a superb small forward, midfielder with raw talent, speed and sublime ball handling.
Earlier in the year Shaleise spoke to local media including AFLDD media and she is excited about participating in the Nationals.
"Yes, I am really excited and can't wait," Law said.
However Law who is originally from Murgon in the South Burnett was not looking forward to the forecast temperatures of below 10 degrees.
"I definitely don't like the cold, I will have to take extra jumpers to be able to function" Law chuckled.
Woomera's Coach Chris Johnson can't wait for the Nationals to get started and excited by coaching the talent group of final footballers.
“I’m grateful to have the opportunity to coach the first Woomeras and look forward to the challenge, “Johnson told the AFL.
He added, “I can’t wait to see how the girls will cope within the champs. The girls
competed in the first Female Indigenous Kick-start Champs back in September of 2013 where their
skill and talent saw them be selected in the first ever National Indigenous female team – the
Woomeras. I hope to give the girls more of an insight on game sense and football fundamentals.”
Shaleise and the Woomera's won't face off against Queensland at the Nationals with the two sides in different divisions but one thing is for sure that the Darling Downs products will play big roles for their respective sides.
