Can the Bats impress?
It has been a tough year for the Bats especially in the Premier Division competition but Danny can reveal individuals have special reason to impress this weekend.
In a sneak peek into this weekend’s Football Record article written by Caitlin Arnold, the club will host its biggest and most anticipated day of the year- the
Audi Centre Sydney UTS Bats Ladies Day.
Haslam takes the opportunity of the Audi Centre Sydney UTS Bats Ladies Day event to spruik his clubmen on the love front.
"It’s worth noting that the single guys who are looking for love at the moment, in particular Frank Boland, Luke Trimboli, Nicky Barrett and James Caica, will be doing everything they can to impress in front of the ladies marquee."
"We also expect our vanity trio - Damon Collina, Justin Kenna and Tom Zilm - to put in that extra one or two percent given the opportunity to impress."
Ramping it up
We start off with a good news story that should give hope to any Sydney footballer looking to make the big time. Former UNSW/ES star and Phelan Medallist, Dane Rampe has been in scintillating form as a mature age recruit with the Sydney Swans.
He arguably played his best game against Fremantle a fortnight ago, earning Coaching Association votes in the process. In 2014, he has averaged 18.8 disposals and 71 Dream Team points- a nice little Point of Difference in Danny’s team.
Wild Wild Wests
You could start a new publication with all the goss we have been receiving from Western Suburbs in the last couple of weeks while Danny has been on a sabbatical.
We have it on good authority that the following has taken place in recent times:
Marcus Linsen has been seen clubbing in the city with ex-teammates from Campbelltown. Apparently this has nothing to do with his recent leg injury.
After his outstanding performance on field, Brenton Mumme, continued his leadership off the field. He set standards as the spinner at two-up and led the boys into a big night. With this said, he is said to be furious his Anzac Day medal has gone missing, which he used as a $50 bet in two-up. Surely it is worth more than that, Brenton?!
Maybe the best one concerns marquee recruit and Taswegian (we won’t hold that against him), Taylor Williamson. It has surfaced that while enjoying a long Easter weekend away with his Russian girlfriend in the Blue Mountains, he went to new heights by setting up an Easter egg hunt through the mountains Amazing Race style for her on the Easter Sunday and then played a live gig for her at a local bar on the Monday evening. What a man!
Warrior in the ranks
On the subject of marquee recruits, Macquarie University lit up the airwaves recently with an incoming transfer. AFL Sydney staff were quick to do their research on the player in question, the one and only Ryan Harris. A member of the coaching staff was recently quoted as having similar tendencies to the Australian fast bowler; "He is a hard worker who keeps hitting the pitch hard..."
Another famous name in the AFL Sydney ranks is Kevin "Bloody" Wilsen (Steve’s dad and team manager at St George). He has been known to host a good comedy routine but will have his work cut out with St George Club Captain David Lycakis. His demeanour in recent times has led to him being nicknamed ‘Grumpy’ by teammates.
Headbands all the rage
I am not sure if it fits in with the surfie lifestyle but headbands are starting to become prevalent at Manly. Connor Petterson is rumoured to be attempting to gain the attention of the umpires with this item of ‘clothing’. Ryan Wearne is another to adopt the ‘fad’. Danny would be keen to hear those from other clubs who have adopted a similar practice.
Fortress Weldon
Manly-Warringah has built somewhat of a fortress in recent times and will be hard to topple in the Club Championships if their home record is anything to go by. In the Club Championship grades (1st grade, Reserves and Under 19s [previously Under 18s])- the GIANTS have only lost 2 games since the start of the 2013 season at home; a 3-point loss to Western Suburbs in Premier Division and a 15-point loss to Holroyd Parramatta in Under 18s (both last year). They could well go this year undefeated in these grades at home.
