Heagney stars in another big win
Report by Daryn McCleave
David Heagney walked off with the match ball as his hat-trick saw off the NPL WA's bottom club, and he and his Bayswater City teammates could have helped themselves to more as they totally dominated the opening 45 minutes.
As it happened Baysie had to be content with a 5-2 win as plucky Subiaco, to their immense credit, never gave up and pulled two goals back to add some respectability to a score-line which threatened to become embarrassing.
Steve Burton opened the scoring in the eighth minute after getting the final touch from a Trent Kay shot, with Heagney making it 2-0 and then 4-0 with James Isaia adding the third in between.
Heagney completed his treble eight minutes into the second half, with Subiaco pulling one back almost immediately through Laurence Gaughan, and in the 90th minute Jordan Rhodes reduced the deficit further from the spot after Ian McMurray had been fouled.
Former Floreat Athena forward Heagney took his City tally to five with his three-goal haul, and was delighted with his afternoon's work.
"It's nice to get a hat-trick at my new club, that's five in games now since I signed," Heagney said.
"We started the game bright and went in 4-0 up at the break, but credit to them, they came out fighting and became a solid defensive unit in the second half.”
Bayswater City coach Chris Coyne believed his side could have added five or six more to the final tally.
"We controlled the game quite well today and played some good stuff and opened them up - no disrespect to Subiaco who I thought battled valiantly, but with a bit more clinical finishing we probably could have had five or six more."
Coyne though was unhappy with the manner in which his side allowed Subiaco to pull two goals back, adding: "I don't like conceding goals, especially poor goals, but credit to Subi, they worked their socks off and got a bit of reward for the hard work they put in today."
After a bright opening from the lowly visitors, it was Bayswater who took the early initiative in the eighth minute when Kay prodded towards goal from a corner and via a couple of ricochets the ball found the net.
A couple of minutes later Sam Mitchinson rattled the post with a shot from outside the box as City searched for a stranglehold on the game.
Bayswater struck the woodwork again, this time Isaia's thumping effort from 20 yards cannoned back off the post, but Heagney did add the second just after half an hour, racing through the visiting defence before his shot - partially blocked by goalkeeper Sam Stone- eventually found its way over the line despite the vain attempt by Gaughan to keep it out.
And it was three just four minutes later, Isaia again proving a real thorn down the left flank, cutting in and running into the box unopposed before picking his spot across goal high into the top corner.
Heagney then got his lines all wrong, somehow clearing the ball when it seemed easier to score before substitute Adrian Caceres, probably shocked the ball came to him, side-footed wide.
But the striker was to redeem himself shortly after when Isaia delivered an excellent pin-point cross for Heagney to nod home from point blank range to make it 4-0 at the break.
And Heagney completed his hat-trick on 53 minutes, lifting a bouncing ball over Stone after finding himself in acres of space.
Subiaco forced a number of corners in a bid to stem the flow, and it was Gaughan who capitalised on City failing to clear their lines, lashing the loose ball into the net in the 56th minute.
The game entered a lull with Baysie seemingly happy with their work and Subiaco content not to concede further.
And really from nowhere heading into stoppage time, a hopeful ball forward found McMurray who went down in the penalty area under challenge from Adam Bachiller, with referee Steven Gregory having no hesitation in pointing to the spot.
Up stepped Rhodes to confidently send Devon Spence the wrong way and cut the winning margin to three.
Subiaco's interim first team coach, forward McMurray, was philosophical in defeat.
"With the quality throughout the whole of Bayswater's squad, we knew it was going to be hard,” he said.
"We had a few chances and never took them, and Bayswater being Bayswater, they had a little sniff and before you know it we're four goals behind.
"The work rate and structure was better in the second half, so on the whole we've got to take the positives from that second half.”
