AFL Darling Downs today have announced a primary squad of 40 players for the inaugural Women's representative side.
2013 Grand-Finalists Lockyer Valley and Premiers South Toowoomba occupy exactly half of the primary squad with both sides boasting very talented and experienced players. All six AFLDD Women's league clubs are represented with Coolaroo having seven players selected the most out of the three new teams.
Star female players Georgie Seaniger and Isabelle Baldock headline the primary squad along with previous Queensland representative Danielle Wall and international recruit Kathy Long also named.
Regional Manager Keith Webb said he was delighted with all Women's clubs represented and said that this is the first step in building the regions female talent pathway.
"To have all of our entire Women's clubs represented is fantastic, it will definitely be a tough task for the coaching staff to cut the side down to the final twenty-three," Webb said of the talented squad.
"This game is something we want to make an annual event and a very important step in building the regions female talent pathway," Webb added.
The Darling Downs women's side will take on Wide Bay in the representative clash in Kingaroy and AFLDD President Andrew Foley is thrilled to take this game to the home of the Saints.
"It will be a full day of events in Kingaroy but to have this representative game will be a real highlight and a step in the right direction to establish female footy in the South Burnett region," Foley said on the prospects of South Burnett Saints AFC having their own women's side.
"They are a relatively new club and to hold this type of game will be great not only for the club but wider community to know that Australian Rules is not just a male sport," President Foley added.
Darling Downs will take on Wide Bay at Lyle Vidler Oval on Saturday 10th May in Kingaroy with the game to kick off at 2:15pm.
From this game players will be selected for the AFLQ All Stars game on June 8th which is the precursor to selection into the AFL Queensland Women's side.
Primary Squad to be cut down to Final Squad of 23 by May 1st.
