This article could last a week or a lifetime... but rather than just looking at the games, Danny wants to get behind the scenes in a lighter-hearted look at AFL Sydney.
Bats off to Zilm
Word is from the Bat Cave that young Tom Zilm has been lapping up his two successive AFL Sydney Team of the Week nominations. Zilm has worked his way up the grades and has gone to great lengths to be recognised. We don’t know if that has extended to the umpires but there could well be a betting market to see if Zilm repeats the dose against the Blues this weekend.
Questions asked in Fantasy League
While everyone is trying to catch Brian Edmonds, there has been an inquiry launched with Football Operations Manager, Matt Graham coming second currently, and his off-sider Scott Burkinshaw in sixth (in a field of 39). Brian is no doubt a great bloke but he must be pulling his hair out supporting the Tigers.
Coaching debuts hailed
The AFL NSW/ACT Sydney Office has a good spread of players and umpires but this year, two employees have thrown their hat into the ring- both of whom had impressive coaching debuts. Anton Turco led his Sydney University Premier Division charges to a first-up win, while Stuart Newman had similar fortunes with Macquarie University against defending premiers, Southern Power. Paul Markou coaching Sydney University Under 19 Division One unfortunately had a first up loss. Time will tell who gains the “Supercoach” title.
Day out for GIANTS
It was a special day for Manly-Warringah at Weldon Oval last weekend. A dominant win in Division Two over Moorebank was followed by a grand win over Pennant Hills. In one of the more surprising results in the last match of the day was a narrow win by their Under 19 Division One side against defending premiers, Pennant Hills. It was a great performance by a side that won the Under 18 Division Two title last year.
On a sidenote, the two leading goal kickers in the competition are GIANTS players- Brayden Fowler (Premier Division) and the enigma himself Matt “Razzle” Rawle (Division Two). I don’t think there is any player who loves a goal more than “Razzle” (and even reverted to the old school drop kick for one of those).
Disappointment at Rising Star announcement
There needed to be some consoling this week when Nor-West’s Paul Webster failed (despite lobbying) to claim the AFL Sydney Rising Star Nomination for Round 2.
On a slightly more serious note, UNSW/ES Bulldog, Abe Davis tore it up last weekend against Sydney University. He has an impressive pedigree including Under 18 NSW/ACT Rams representative, Kieran Jack Medalist (Best & Fairest Under 16 Sydney Harbour player in 2012).
Could there be another Davis running around at the Sydney Swans next year?
