Round 3 will begin under lights as last year’s Grand-Finalists University go head to head with the Toowoomba Tigers at USQ AFL Oval from 7:00pm.
One week is a long time in footy and for Toowoomba they will be hoping to be more competitive for the entire game this week as they face the hard running Cougars. Tigers are coming off a footballing lesson by Warwick in round 2 when they were comprehensively defeated by 137points at home.
Toowoomba are in a rebuilding phase but would not be happy with the poor showing against the Redback’s.
University however are coming off a well-rounded victory against Goondiwindi where they ran riot and put together a powerful four quarter effort. The most impressive part of the Cougars round 2 encounter was their defensive six and Cory Balnaves was the general down back, with University keeping the Hawks to 8 majors for the entire game.
For Toowoomba the return of former premiership Captain Luke Adams is a welcome sight for the Tigers faithful as he will play a pivotal role in the development of the younger brigade.
Coach/Player Adams will be looking to veterans O'Donoghue and McErvale to help shoulder the load and inspire the next generation of Tigers to the next level. Premiership players Bailey, Turpin and Smith are key if the Tigers are to upset the Cougars.
University are again a premiership contender despite losing eight players from last year’s Grand-Final.
The likes of superstar Heath Gniel, skipper Al Reilly, Josh Yosh, Stuart Huggins and co, they still have enough fire power to challenge the benchmark side Coolaroo. University's biggest recruit of the season though is new recruit Aaron Howard, brother of former St Kilda player Brad Howard.
Aaron is a talented athlete in his chosen sport of basketball. Howard was originally identified through AFLQ School Programs but was unfortunately unable to commit due to commitments elsewhere. Howard will provide the Cougars with plenty of run and will give opposition sides a match up nightmare.
It should be an interesting battle between these two sides, with each team having to adapt to the greasy night time conditions.
In other Round 3 Allied Pickford's Cup action Goondiwindi will face reigning premiers Coolaroo who are coming off a physical encounter and would of enjoyed the 8 day break. The Hawks were outclassed by University and will enjoy been back at the Hawks Nest, Riddles Oval. This is where Goondiwindi play their best footy, with a strong vocal crowd always getting behind the Hawkies.
Game first bounce at 2:00pm at Riddles Oval
South Toowoomba will host the Highfields Lions at Rockville Oval, with the Bombers new home ground unavailable the red and black will need to adapt quickly to the round 3 adopted home ground. Lions are coming off a big win against the Demons, where new coach/player Miels Grice booted 14-majors to take the lead in the John Green Trophy.
