Our Lady of the Southern Cross College have continued their dominance of the Dalby Swans Cup, as the Dalby private school took out both the Boys and Girls division finals at Dalby AFC on Friday.
Dalby State School was the only other primary school contender, where their girls side took on powerhouse OLOSCC in the decider. It was a see-sawing affair with both sides unable to penetrate the oppositions defensive lines in the physical encounter. The State School struck the first blow of the Grand-Final booting a major through star player Kahlee Bolam. This goal seemed to wake a sleeping giant as the OLOSCC girls kicked into gear, booting a major and several behinds going into the first break.
After half-time it was all one-way traffic but OLOSCC kept Dalby State in the game with their inaccuracy in front of goal. The next goal of the game didn’t come until late in the third quarter when Rosie Ebbage booted home an impressive 6 pointer from the pocket. Dalby State kicked the first of the last term to reduce the margin to only 9 points but OLOSCC put the result within doubt booting the next goal and 7 behinds, as the inaccuracy continued.
As the final siren sounded, Our Lady of the Southern Cross College ran out 3.13 (31) to 2.0 (12) victors in the AFL Queensland Dalby Swans Cup Primary girls division Grand-Final. Ella Langton (OLOSCC) was judged best on ground in the decider.
In the Boys division decider it was an intra-school game with Our Lady of the Southern Cross College sides facing off against each other. The Colleges number 3 boys side went through the round robin stages undefeated and finished the competition in the same manner. OLOSCC 3 defeated OLOSCC 2 by 21points with Jonty McDougall named as the Tim Lincoln Trophy recipient for best on ground in the Grand-Final.
AFL Queensland Regional Manager Keith Webb was impressed by the overall skill and talent on show throughout the competition.
“Both the boys and girls competitions this year were by far the most competitive with the skill and talent of players on show well and truly above expectations for the Dalby Swans Cup,” Webb said.
“The Dalby Swans Cup is our premier country primary school competition in the Darling Downs with 20 teams participating in 2014.
“Our biggest challenge is now to transition these boys and girls across to the local footy club and have them playing Under 12’s or 10’s, I am confident quite a few will come across and give Aussie Rules a go,” Regional Manager Keith Webb added.
In the competitions eighth year the Dalby Swans Cup has grown from 5 boys division teams to a combined 20 team competition between Our Lady of the Southern Cross College, Dalby State School and Dalby South State School. Our Lady of the Southern Cross College have held the Dalby Swans Cup for all eight years in the boys division and also in the girls division fifth year had the cup each of those five years also. Competition Manager and AFL Queensland Development Coordinator Jeff Neumann said his plan was to grow the competition further and include Dalby Christian College in 2015.
“The Dalby Swans Cup has gone from strength to strength from its very first year, our plan is to grow this even further and hopefully in 2015 include the fourth school in the region Dalby Christian College,” Neumann said of the plans for the Dalby Swans Cup.
“We will look to bring in pools for next years competition and hopefully 2015 may be the year one of the State Schools win the Dalby Swans Cup,” Neumann added on OLOSCC dominance.
The Dalby Swans Cup has wrapped up for the year with over 300 primary school students across the three Dalby primary schools participating in the AFL Queensland run competition. Look out for the return of the Dalby Swans Cup in 2015 in early February.
