Premiers Coolaroo have started 2014 on the right note but were made to work for the victory in a nail-biting 1-point win at Heritage Oval.
In the first of many Friday night games, the Round 2 encounter between the Roo's and South Toowoomba was a thrilling blockbuster in front of a strong and vocal crowd. Hundreds of spectators witnessed Déjà vu as the reigning premiers came back from a 4-goal three quarter time deficit.
Coolaroo forward/midfielder Tom Rudolph kicked a game high 6-goals and stood up when needed most in the latter stages of the epic encounter.
The game was played at a blistering pace for four quarters with the Bombers in control for much of the contest. It was the big game experience that counted most and for Coolaroo this was their time to shine.
Michael Langton and Corey Bellert were also impressive for the Premiers as was Dan McPhee and Mark Lorenzo for the home side.
In other Round 2 games University were too strong for the visiting Hawks at USQ AFL Oval. The Cougars roared to a 64point victory with veterans Al Reilly and Heath Gniel kicking 3-each. Rick Mackay and Cory Balnaves were the two standouts for University as was Aaron Howard who is younger brother of 2007 St Kilda #27 draftee Brad Howard.
For Goondiwindi Brent Townsend was superb in his 100th game for the Hawks and veteran Steve Collett was in vintage form but the 2013 Grand-Finalists University proved they are again a force to watch.
Warwick continued their good start to the 2014 season with a big win over Toowoomba at Rockville Oval. The Redbacks recorded a 137point victory that included a bag of 8-goals by former three-time Holman Medallist Brendan Iles.
Tigers were unable to match the hard running Reddies outfit but Toowoomba were impressed by the debut of Nathan Brown who was the stand-out Tiger in the clash.
Out at Kratzke Oval Highfields Lions newly appointed Coach and player Miels Grice booted 14-goals as the Lions ran riot in their big win against Lockyer Valley. Highfields booted 8 second quarter goals to put the result in doubt before the main break.
William Mitchell was the standout Demon and was well supported by Jacob Schroen and Harley Hicks. For a full round summary of the Allied Pickford's Cup click below.
