The Goondiwindi Hawks first grade men’s side have begun their season with a resounding 29.19 (193) to 6.10 (46) win against the Lockyer Valley Demons.
A high scoring first quarter saw the Hawks kick a total of twelve goals to the Demons’ four.
The points didn’t stop there as Goondiwindi piled goal upon goal, opening an insurmountable 131 point lead heading into the final quarter.
The Lockyer Valley fought until the end, but the Goondiwindi attack was unstoppable on the day being led by Fergus Mclaughlin who kicked six goals.
Mclaughlin’s teammates Jeremy Leahy, Troy Millard, David O’Toole weren’t far behind as each booted through an impressive five goals of their own.
Lockyer Valley’s Mick Wein did his best to keep the score respectable for the Demons, adding two goals for the visitors.
Goondiwindi’s next matchup will take place at the USQ AFL Oval on Saturday in what looks to be close encounter with the University Cougars.
The Hawks women’s team didn’t fare quite as well as the men, dropping a hard fought game to the Demons 4.2 (26) to 3.6 (24).
It was Goondiwindi’s first ever action in the women’s competition and proved they are a force to be reckoned with this season.
The Hawks held a slight lead at the end of each quarter before being outscored four goals to three in the fourth.
The Goondiwindi ladies have a bye in round two before facing Coolaroo on Saturday April 12 at Riddles Oval.
