The Chinchilla Suns men’s reserve grade have drawn first blood in the western derby with an 8.15 (63) to 6.8 (44) win over rival Dalby Swans.
The victory puts Chinchilla in the history books as it marks their first ever win against the Swans.
A close game at the end of the first quarter, Chinchilla extended its lead to fourteen points heading into halftime.
But resilience payed off for Dalby as the teams traded goals and went into the final quarter with the Suns clinging to a three point advantage.
Despite the comeback effort, Chinchilla was not about to be denied an important opening round win and booted eight goals to the Swan’s six in the fourth.
Kristian Muir proved to be the difference maker in the match for Chinchilla, kicking a game high five goals and besting opponent Ben Banks who chipped in four goals of his own for Dalby.
The Suns will look to make it two wins in a row as they travel to USQ Oval Sunday afternoon for a round two match against the University Cougars.
University have yet to play a game as their round one grand final rematch with Coolaroo was cancelled due to rain forcing field closures in Toowoomba.
