The Warwick Redbacks first grade men’s side have opened their 2014 season with a convincing 20.9 (129) to 8.12 (60) win over the Highfields Lions at Reddies Oval.
A quick start for Warwick set the tone for the match, with the Redbacks booting six goals to the Lions one in the opening quarter.
From there it was no looking back as Warwick quickly built upon its lead and headed into the final quarter with a 68 point advantage.
Adam Stevenson was the standout for the Redbacks, kicking a game high five goals.
Miels Grice (three goals) and Carl Stevenson (two) did their best to keep the Lions within reach, but it was all in a lost cause as Warwick clearly overmatched the visiting Highfields.
Warwick will next travel to Rockville Oval Saturday to face the Toowoomba Tigers for their round two clash.
In the men’s reserve grade, things didn’t go quite as well for Warwick as they fell to a talented Lions squad 19.18 (132) to 2.7 (19).
The Redbacks were held without a goal until the third quarter and trailed by 67 points at the final change.
Luke Bianchi (five goals) and Patrick Mccormack (four) starred for Highfields, as the Lions were seemingly impossible to stop.
Kurt Heir and Shannon Cameron were the only Redbacks able to kick a goal on the day. The Warwick reserve grade team will have a chance to recollect themselves with two consecutive byes, before facing University in round four.
