The Peter Jackson VFL returned with three matches to kick off the season.
Premiers ready for title defence
The Box Hill Hawks’ title defence started in the best possible fashion as they outlasted new VFL standalone Williamstown at Burbank Oval.
The Hawks raced out to an 18 point lead early, and kept a two goal buffer throughout the day to produce a win in their Round 15 rescheduled clash by 13 points.
AFL Hawk Jed Anderson was lively early (before a slight injury), while 2012 Liston Medalist Ben Ross adjusted to his new colours by producing the same sort of form that helped him get drafted to Hawthorn.
Scott Clouston made a return to the forward line at his new club kicking two goals for the Seagulls, along with Ryan Ferguson, Michael Gibbons and Jake Owen.
Pat Lawlor led the way for the Hawks with three goals, while former Western Jet James Sicily kicked two.
Magpies hold off Roosters
Collingwood overcame a final term scare from North Ballarat to claim a Round 1 victory.
The Magpies led at every change, but trailed by four points midway through the final term. The home team steadied and claimed the win by 12 points.
Ben Kennedy was the best for eh Magpies, along with Thomas, Yagmoor and Ramsay.
For the Roosters, Luke Kiel and the returning Nick Peter were their best, while Max Warren led the disposals with 32, followed by Liam Anthony 27 (and 10 tackles) and Robin Nahas 3 goals. North Melbourne international rookie Eric Wallace debuted for the Roosters' seniors with 27 hitouts.
Battle of the standalones episode 1
A nine goal to two final term has seen Port Melbourne stop a determined Coburg in their return as a stand alone VFL side. The new Lions kept within a few goals of the Borough for the first two-and-a-half quarters, before Josh Scipione burst open the game with three third term goals.
New Borough recruit Will Johnson led the way with five goals, while Chris Cain was his at his normal best, enjoying the return of ruckman David Fanning in the middle.
Daniel Venditti showed by he won Coburg’s best & fairest last year with a best on ground performance, joined by Thomas, Proud and Saad in the best players.
