Jets Run Riot Over Heat

Hat-tricks to Royce Brownlie and Matthew Capelo have guided Moreton Bay United Jets to a crushing 9-2 win over FNQ FC Heat on Saturday night at Wolter Park.

Defender Alex Henderson also netted just before half-time and Charles Mendy scored a second half brace as the Jets sent a nine-goal warning to their NPL title rivals.

Crios O’Hare pulled a goal back for the visitors, while Cameron Morrison added a further consolation with the final kick of the game.

On a night when it rained goals at Wolter Park Henderson and Jared Austin spurned early chances before Brownlie opened accounts on 12 minutes, stabbing home from close range from Mendy’s by-line cross.

Brownlie struck again two minutes later, pouncing on a loose ball and beating the FNQ goalkeeper Kevin Ward from 15 yards.

The Jets’ skipper could have had a hat-trick inside five minutes but saw another effort slide wide. Seconds later Ryota Nakaooka forced a fine save from Ward.

Capelo struck his first of the night from a Nakaooka cross on 28 minutes and four minutes later Brownlie secured his hat-trick by steering home his shot from 12 yards after again being found by Mendy.

O’Hare converted from Matt Murphy’s cross on 37 minutes to give Heat hope of a comeback. However, Jets restored the four-goal advantage when Ward misjudged a corner late in the half allowing Henderson to head home unchallenged.

Following the restart, Murphy continued to impress for Heat despite the unflattering score line – shooting wide and forcing a save from Jets goalkeeper Mario Aparicio. He also teed up Jamie Gosling who failed to make the most of the chance.

French forward Charles Mendy rolled in the Jets’ sixth goal on 56 minutes and Capelo netted again shortly after for his second.

In the 69th minute Mendy fired high into the FNQ net following a corner to secure his brace and Capelo’s left-foot strike on 71 minutes completed his hat-trick.

Brownlie was denied by Ward’s sliding tackle and Austin hit the FNQ post before Morrison pulled a second goal back for the visitors deep in injury time.

The result secures Moreton Bay in the league’s top four, while Heat drop to 11th place and could fall further depending on other results in the round.
