The 2014 AFL Darling Downs season was officially launched on Friday evening at the Toowoomba City Golf Club with President Andrew Foley labelling the year ahead, the year of opportunity.
"AFLDD will this year host 414 games of competitive football", Foley told those in attendance.
"We have this year expanded to include 16 senior men’s teams (up from 14 in 2013) and doubled the number of women’s teams (from 3 to 6). Some clubs have also expanded to include Under 6s.
"This is all good news for a game which wishes to expand, making 2014 the year of opportunity and one to further strengthen our great game across the Darling Downs."
The evening was highlighted by the group 'selfie' taken by Development Coordinator Jeff Neumann.
Inspired by the Oscars 'selfie' the season launch 'selfie' included local high profile personnel in Toowoomba Regional Council Mayor Paul Antonio, Member for Toowoomba North Trevor Watts, Paul Knight from Sport and Recreation, Keith Beer from McDonald's and newly appointed AFL State Development Manager Mark Ensor, along with members of the AFL Darling Downs community.
"The highlight of the AFLDD Season Launch was the Jeff Neumann 'selfie' with Mayor Paul Antonio and the DD football community," Regional Manager Keith Webb said
"A great night and a big thank you to Paul for being such a great sport."
AFL Darling Downs also released the vision forward with the proposed state of the art facility which will tie in with Toowoomba Regional Council plans for the sporting hub precinct at Charlton. Female footy was also high on the agenda with plans in place to add youth girls competitions to the landscape over the next 12-18months.
"It is exciting time for the region, from the proposed sporting hub with TRC at Charlton and building on our female participation," Regional Manager Keith Webb said on the vision forward for the region.
AFL Darling Downs 2014 season official kicks off on Friday 28th March, with the Grand-Final replay between Division 1 sides University Cougars and Coolaroo at USQ Baker Street Oval at 7:00pm. To check out the 2014 fixture click here.
