The inaugural Dragons Golf Day, the major fundraiser for the St. George Australian football club, was a roaring success, when held last Friday, 7th of March at Kogarah Golf Club.
A field of over 70 players, including current and past players, supporters of the club, club sponsors and even a few Sydney Swans players kicked off proceedings with a round of four ball ambrose.
It was a return to his home club for Lloyd Perris, who was recently picked up by the Sydney Swans in the 2013 Rookie draft. Perris, who played two seasons with St. George, after completing his junior footballing with Cronulla Sharks JAFC, managed to take the afternoon off after a grueling pre-season with the Sydney Swans senior squad.
Perris’ team, included 2005 Premiership hero, Nick Davis, who also played senior football with St. George AFC, after completing his junior football at Ramsgate Rams. Davis, remembered by many for kicking the goal that got the Sydney Swans into the 2005 AFL Grand Final, which they went on to win, is currently the Runner/Assistant Coach of the Sydney Swans senior squad.
Completing the foursome were young guns, Matthew Dick and Harry Marsh who, along with Perris, will look to make their debut for the Swans this year. The day had a real “Swans flavour,” with Sydney Swans Team of the Century player and current Player Welfare Manager, Dennis Carroll, also attending the day.
While a lot of their time is spent at training, there is obviously still time to work on the golf game, as the Swans players finished the day in second place at 8 under. MI Linings, major sponsor of the St. George Academy, took out honours on the day with a score of 12 under.
Club President, Brendan Donohue was ecstatic with the turnout on the day.
“It was a real blend of the young and the old, with a number of players mixing with past players, legends of the club and lifelong supporters. Not only was the day a success in that it was a great fundraiser, but it also brought a number of people back to the club, in what will be an exciting year for the Dragons as they chase premiership success in the AFL Sydney Premier Division.”
The day concluded with an auction, presentation and Sportsmans Panel, where Nick Davis delighted the crowd with a recounting of the 2005 Premiership season.
St. George AFC would like to thank major sponsors on the day, Mortgage Choice, Yellow Brick Road, Caringbah and Schell Stevens for making this day possible.
The Dragons first game is at home on Saturday, 31st of March at Olds Park, Peakhurst against 2013 Premiers, Manly-Warringah Wolves.
