Fairholme College has proven to be the new powerhouse stomping ground for female footballers, after 9 students from the school were selected in the 2014 Darling Downs school girls squad.
Near 60, 16 years and under female students from across the Downs trialled for the 2014 squad with girls travelling from all over the region to strive to be selected into the team. Fairholme was the stand-out school with 9 overall selections, with the remainder of the squad coming from schools across the region.
St Saviour's College produced 2 selections, with Australian Indigenous representative Shaliese Law ineligible for selection due to the National Youth Girls carnival clashing with the school-girls State Championships.
Other schools represented in the team are; Crow's Nest State School (2), Dalby State High School (3), Centenary Heights State High (2), Toowoomba Christian College (1), Concordia College (1), Toowoomba State High (1), Downland's College (1) and St Joseph's College Toowoomba (1).
AFLQ Regional Manager Keith Webb was delighted with the overall numbers and excited about how the team will go at the State Championships in May.
"Great result for the school-girls program and youth girls football in the region, to have 60 trials in only the second year is fantastic," Webb said.
"The squad of 23 looks a very strong and talented young group and I believe they will be hard to beat at the upcoming championships.
"Our next challenge is to transition these talented footballers into our club system, which I am confident we will be able to do."
Lockyer District State High teacher Nick Clarry will coach the side and will be assisted by one of the region’s leading school ambassadors in Dan Fraser (Downland's College) along with Clinton Watts (Crow's Nest SS) and Tania Van Den Acker (St Saviour's).
The Darling Downs school-girls side will contest the State championships in Maroochydore from May 3rd to 6th.
