Sydney University Colts an elite pathway
The program has been a breeding ground for a host of AFL talent.
Collingwood's Jarrod Witts, a product of the Colts program.
Inaugurated in 2009, the Sydney University Colts Program has proven be a successful platform for a number of listed national AFL players.
Tom Young (Collingwood, Western Bulldogs), Jarrod Witts (Collingwood), and Craig Moller (Fremantle) all commenced their senior careers out of the SUANFC Colts.
The Colts Program has also acted as a home after an AFL Career; Adam Campbell, Malcolm Lynch, and Will Sierakowski have all looked to the University Club after finishing playing at the highest level.
The Colts program has also been a launching pad into the SUANFC and interstate state league senior playing ranks.
Tim Barrett, a product of the SUANFC Colts, was selected in the 2013 North East AFL's (NEAFL) Team of the Year, while 2013 Colts players Matt Vicic (2013 Keally Medallist), Jack Hiscox, and Yarran Jaffer were all selected to play in the victorious 2013 Swans Reserves NEAFL Premiership side.
In 2014, Sydney University joins the newly structured Sydney AFL U19 Division 1 competition.
Coming into the Program in 2014, their U19 players will have the opportunity to be invited into the Senior Development Squad (SDS).
Under the management of Senior Coach, Daniel Gilmore, young players looking to progress to SAFL Premier Division and NEAFL football will gain much from second year SDS Coach, Tom Morrison, who has an impressive resume as a specialist Junior Development Coach with WAFL club Claremont.
The Colts Program includes access to excellent training facilities, including as many as four on-campus ovals and one off-campus oval, as well as the use of University gyms and indoor sporting venues as alternate training venues in wet weather.
While Sydney University Football Club offers young people the opportunity to play at the highest level outside the national AFL competition, it also offers an opportunity to study at a leading tertiary institution.
The Elite Athlete Program, supported by the Club's University partner, Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness (SUSF) provides scholarships to talented young footballers looking to continue their education to a tertiary level.
At the same time, SUANFC is committed to participation, and after the Colts Program, the club provides the opportunity to play through lowers grades; in the Sydney AFL Division 2, 3, 4 and 5, as well as fielding a NSW AFL Masters side.
While success is a big part of the Colts program, the club is committed to fostering a positive environment within which young people can develop as much on as off the field. The SUANFC, through Community Partners Bendigo Bank Pyrmont, is strongly committed to the local community and junior football across Sydney’s metropolitan area.
Sydney University will be holding an information night for prospective colts players on 12 March at 6pm. See the attached flyer for more information.
