MANLY Wolves shocked the Sydney AFL men’s Premier Division after winning the flag last season at their first attempt – and based on that success have formed an open women’s team.
Assistant coach and mother of two Alisa Kelley lives in Frenchs Forest.
She fancied a game locally and a plan was hatched via the club last year.
Fast forward to 2014 and that pipedream is now a reality, with the Wolves to field a women’s squad in the Sydney division two competition come April.
At the moment they have recruited close to 20 players, but are chasing a dozen more before the season proper.
“It is exciting times, to be part of the inaugural squad under the Wolves banner is great,’’ Kelley said.
“We are placing emphasis on fun, and enjoying a new sport.
“We will be one of four new teams in the league, and we are targeting girls or ladies of all sporting standards who are keen to broaden their horizons.”
Sam Engel will don the captain’s armband, and she is equally excited about the potential in the playing group.
Having played for 12 seasons all over Australia, she has witnessed the sport boom in terms of female participation.
“I have been impressed with the skill set of the girls at training,’’ she said.
“It is obvious we have some natural athletes on our roster.
“I think it will be a fantastic year and a real buzz to be a part of.”
Club president Russell Clack said the formation of a ladies team is exciting.
“We are all about promoting the code on the northern beaches,’’ he said.
“Alisa and Sam have done a wonderful job from scratch and we look forward to this team carving out their own identity while representing the Wolves.”
If you fancy a run don’t hesitate to call Alisa on 0409 877 503 or email manlyafl women@gmail.com.
Training is twice a week with home games out of Weldon Oval in Curl Curl.
