New Season Sparks Fire Hopes

2013 NPL Queensland semi-finalists Sunshine Coast Fire are looking to go one better in the National Premier Leagues this season as they look to regain the edge that saw them dominate the former Queensland State League.

The Fire is looking for a mix of youth and experience to provide the winning edge in the NPL this season.

The teams returned to pre-season training in early January, with more than 60 players vying for selection into senior teams.

Director of Coaching, Kevin A’herne-Evans said the coaching staff had their work cut out in narrowing down the numbers and selecting the right players for the season ahead.

“The 2014 NPL will be a really tough season,” A’herne-Evans conceded.

“The introduction of the Roar and the Malaysian team together with the strengthening of a number of existing NPL teams means every week there will be difficult, competitive games.

“We need to build a squad that will get us results,” he stated.

After the 2013 season, the coaching staff identified a need for greater depth in the senior squads and this was something A’herne-Evans said will be addressed with the 2014 teams.

“One of the pleasing things about exposing so many younger players in the First Team last year and the success of our Under 18s is that it accelerated their development as footballers and they have returned healthier, hungrier, and determined to secure a senior squad placement in 2014.

“When you add these younger boys to the quality and experience of Fire players Greig Henslee, Ryan Smith, Antony Hall, Leon Dwyer and Paul Arnison, who form the backbone of our squad, it certainly looks like we will have greater depth.”

“The intensity and work ethic at training has been pleasing and we are looking forward to the start of the 2014 NPL season.”
