The AFL Sydney fixtures have now been finalised after significant input from clubs and have today gone live on Footyweb.
All men’s competitions and Under 19’s Division One commence on Saturday 29th March with the Women’s Division Two and Under 19 competitions kicking off Saturday 5th April. The final competition to begin is Women’s Division One which begins on Saturday 12th April.
There are still a handful of games to be confirmed (mainly Sydney University home games which are waiting on their NEAFL draw confirmation) however these are hoped to be finalised within the next week or two.
The Men’s Division Five competition is likely to have some changes so this has not been uploaded as yet. As a guide, clubs have been issued with a draft draw for this competition.
With some significant structural changes, in particular to Premier Division which has been reduced to ten teams and the Under 19’s competitions, on paper all competitions look as close as they have ever been which sets the scene for what promises to be a very even and exciting 2014 season.
A few early season highlights from the Premier Division fixture include:
- Opening Round blockbusters as reigning Premiers Manly-Warringah travel to the highly fancied St George, a “Battle of the Eastern Suburbs” with a bit of added spice as UTS host their former coach who has taken the reins at UNSW/ES while Western Suburbs who have been very active in their 2014 recruitment take on one of the form teams at the end of 2013 in Campbelltown.
- Manly-Warringah raising their 2013 Premiership flag at Weldon in Round 2 in what is a Grand Final rematch
- The 2nd instalment of the Bendigo Bank Cup between fierce rivals North Shore and Manly-Warringah from Gore Hill Oval as part of “Mega Saturday” which also includes three other North Shore v Manly-Warringah matches
- A potential Western Suburbs v Pennant Hills ANZAC Day clash from Picken Oval (still to be confirmed)
- UTS Ladies Day from Waverley Oval as the Bats host Sydney University in what is one of the biggest days on the AFL Sydney calendar
In the Women’s competitions a few highlights include:
- The Women’s Division One competition opening round at BISP featuring Balmain taking on UNSW-ES Stingrays now under the tutelage of their former coach while last years Premiers Sydney University facing Western Wolves
- The Women’s Division Two competition opening round featuring four new teams (exc. Gosford) at Mona Park
- A Round 2 Grand Final rematch between Sydney University and Balmain Dockers
Details of finals dates for each competition will be released in the coming week.
