AFL Sydney umpire Carl Fletcher has been awarded the inaugural Most Valuable Employee award for the work he has done for AFL in NSW/ACT.
To complement the improvements in recognising and measuring the achievements of staff, this year AFL NSW/ACT awarded a Most Valuable Employee award to the person that has demonstrated the core values of Respect, Excellence, Accountability and Progressiveness throughout the year, and shown commitment to the principles and processes in everything they do for the AFL.
Fletcher has shown compassion and care to the people he works with, and above all, continually strived to grow the game and set a wonderful example for those around him.
Some of Carl’s achievements this year are:
- Umpiring the Premier Division Grand Final between Manly Warringah and Pennant Hills
- Umpiring the AFL Sydney representative game against AFL Cairns in June
- Expanding the regional umpiring squad from 38 to 76 umpires
- Appointing Umpire Ambassadors to 22 junior football clubs to help support and promote umpiring within the club system.
- Achieving a growth of 12.8% in GSJ Umpiring numbers
- Ensuring the continual, sustainable growth of volunteers and coaches in his region by improving succession planning and support networks.
- Starting a new junior training group in Penrith, and running the group for the first month to help educate the volunteers.
AFL NSW/ACT State Umpiring Manager, Graham Glassford had kind words for Fletcher, "Carl’s knowledge of the junior umpires within his region of not only their umpiring talent but also their personal situation is phenomenal given that not only does Carl look after talent but is also assisting leagues with their coaching and overall management of the GSJ umpiring. His role would be akin to Talent & Coaching Program Manager and Community Football Manager rolled into one. He has also increased the number of volunteers in umpiring because of Carl’s openness and support to each of the volunteers".
