The season will commence on March 29, following the split-round season opener to the 2014 Toyota AFL Premiership Season, with the final home and away round to be played on August 23. The 2014 season will consist of 21 rounds played over 22 weeks, with each club playing 18 matches.
Highlights of the draw include two Anzac Day matches, to be played in Mackay and Darwin; four regional matches - Wagga, Mackay, Wollongong and Alice Springs; and 21 curtain-raisers to AFL matches in Queensland, NSW and the Northern Territory.
The NEAFL Grand Final will be played on the weekend of September 13/14, coinciding with Week Two of the 2014 Toyota AFL Finals Series.
National AFL Second Tier Manager Simon Laughton said the revised format would create positive opportunities for players and clubs across the league.
“We’re working to enhance the talent pathways for talented players in the northern states, and we’re proud to see that this league provides local players with the chance to play top quality football around New South Wales, the ACT, Queensland and in the Northern Territory,” Laughton said.
“We are committed to ensuring that the NEAFL competition is strong and robust, and this year’s streamlined format will ensure that matches are competitive and challenging in every round.”
