AFLDD Media review the season of each of the regions clubs, reviewing the season that was including the club highlights and key moments throughout 2013.
Coolaroo Football Club is the twelfth and final on the review system and with 5 premierships to their name this season, the Roos have plenty to be proud of.
With great numbers, the Roos were well represented at the beginning of the season and were set to dive into competition.
The U8s and U10s had a great year, with consistent numbers and plenty of fun.
The U12s side’s season started slow, as after two forfeits in their favour, the Roos didn’t play until Round 3 and so the side left nothing to chance. The side was unstoppable with great wins, and even better footy in the first 14 rounds. Coolaroo was then stopped in their tracks, with University dealing the side their first loss of the season, defeating them 7.8.50-3.1.19. Highfields and South Toowoomba joined in as well, as Coolaroo fumbled 3 losses in a row. Not to be discouraged, the team came back to defeat Dalby 9.10.64-5.3.33 in the last round of games. The side finished in first position, winning the minor premiership by 4 points over Highfields. The finals were played in text-book style. Coolaroo enjoyed a week off before defeating Highfields in the semi-final 10.3.63-1.5.11 and going on to beat Dalby and take out the premiership, winning the grand final 10.0.60-5.6.36.
Coolaroo’s U14 also seemed to be unstoppable in 2013. Similar to their younger companions, the side didn’t step onto the field until Round 3, where they won convincingly over South Toowoomba 12.16.88-4.2.26. From here, the Roos dropped just one game to Highfields in Round 7, going down by 74 points. With such consistent footy, the U14 side finished atop of the table, with the second minor premiership from the club, again denying Highfields by just 1 win. It was an exciting series of finals footy for the side. After a week off, they scraped past Highfields by 6 points in the semi-final to enter the Grand Final. On game day, Coolaroo was out to show why they were the minor premiers, and went out swinging, kicking a whopping 16 majors. The side came away with the win, defeating the Swans 16.11.107-6.6.42.
The U16 side didn’t see as a successful season as their junior counterparts, as Dalby dominated the McDonald’s Cup. But a 2nd place finish was nothing to cry about! With both of their byes in the early round of the season and a couple of losses to boot, Coolaroo was in 4th place after Round 9, eyeing off Warwick and University in the second half of the season. The Roos snapped into action, with 6 out of their last 9 regular matches. In Round 1, Coolaroo had no time to waste, defeating Warwick 19.12.126-6.2.38 before taking down minor premier and competition giants Dalby by just two behinds in the semi-final 10.13.73 to 10.11.71. Little did they know, this match up was to repeat itself in the Grand Final, and the side had their work cut out for them, taking on the team that had finished a dominant 22 points ahead of them on the table. But Coolaroo put stats and figures out of their mind and went back to basics, finishing victors of a great game, 11.6.72-9.7.61.
The reserve side had an up and down season, finishing with equal wins (1 forfeit) and losses from the home and away season. They sat second on the ladder, behind University and booked themselves a Grand final appearance against the Cougars. Despite being toe-to-toe with Uni all season, and even going down by a massive 118 points in 12, the Roos rallied when it counted, taking the Grand final 7.9.51-6.8.44 and doing their part to put Coolaroo’s name down in history.
The senior A grade side were unlucky not to take out the club’s 3rd minor premiership of the season. After some fantastic regular rounds of footy, the Roos were handed their first loss in Round 15 and were left to trail University at the top of the table by a mere 50% goal difference. With some big wins to finish the season, the Roos chased University down, but fell short by 30%, leaving them with plenty to focus on in the finals series. The side defeated Toowoomba in the qualifying final, but couldn’t overcome University in the semi-final, going down 10.9.69-10.15.75. A beaut of déjà-vu saw the side take on Toowoomba in the preliminary final, but this time the boys made short work of the reigning premiers, 15.13.103-5.6.36 and were looking to the Grand Final the following week.
Having won 4 premierships, it would have been easy for Coolaroo to be happy and go home. But the senior side wouldn’t have a bar of it. The side fought til the death to take home the club’s 5th win of the season and making Coolaroo the club to chase in 2014.
