AFLDD Media review the season of each of the regions clubs, reviewing the season that was including the club highlights and key moments throughout 2013.
Toowoomba AFC is eleventh on the review system. As Toowoomba East Stingers and Toowoomba Tigers look towards a union, there is plenty to reflect upon, and take forth as the two clubs look towards a huge 2014.
The senior A grade side, Toowoomba Tigers, had a lot of great expectations coming into the 2013 season, following their win in 2012. However, the first round certainly didn’t happen as planned as the Tigers fell to their Runner’s Up of last year, South Toowoomba.
It seemed the Bombers had plenty more to prove in this Grand Final rematch, handing the Tigers a 9.20.74 – 9.8.62 loss. This didn’t faze the champions though, as the Tigers were strong competitors and found themselves sitting in 3rd place half way through the season. With a consistent second half of games, they boys moved into the finals series full of confidence. With plenty of finals series from the previous three years, the Tigers knew how to approach the intensity of finals but it seemed this year, there was a new powerhouse in town.
Coolaroo was too good for Toowoomba in the qualifying final defeating the Tigers by 12 points, and despite fielding a great effort to beat Warwick the following week, come Round 3 of finals, the boys still couldn’t match a dynamo Coolaroo outfit. This time, Tigers went down by 67 points ending their chances of a fourth straight premiership.
Despite missing out on the Grand Final in 2013, no one will underestimate the Toowoomba side, and they will certainly be a team to beat in 2014.
As the junior portion of the club, Toowoomba East Stingers fielded sides in U14, U12, U10 and U8. They also had great numbers at local Auskick centres.
The U14 Stingers side had a rocky start to the season, playing some great footy, but unable to convert on the scoreboard. However, come Round 8, the side got it right, taking down South Burnett in an exciting 12.12.84-1.5.11 win. The young side followed this up with two more wins, and carried on their new found groove into the second half of the season. In the final tallies, the side finished in 6th position, just one win away from the top five. After coming so close this year, no doubt this growing side will come out fighting in 2014, ready to take their place in the finals series.
U12 side also suffered a slow start to the season, with the Stingers unable to get any points on the board. But in Round 4, the side found their first points and also finished the game with their first win of the season, finishing off Pittsworth 16.13109-6.3.39. With the win in their sails, the boys and girls went on to win 3 out of their next five games, but after the half way mark, the side struggled to get another ‘W’ next to their name. Despite a disappointing end to the season, the young Stingers have walked away from a season having learnt a lot, and willing to plenty of it into practise in 2014.
Although Toowoomba East may have not had the on field success that other clubs saw in 2013, it did have bragging rights come presentation night, taking out the Club of the Year award, recognising all aspects of the club. Congratulations to Toowoomba East Stingers!
Together, Toowoomba Tigers and Toowoomba East Stingers are set to make Toowoomba AFC ‘s 2014 a great success.
