AFLDD Media review the season of each of the regions clubs, reviewing the season that was including the club highlights and key moments throughout 2013.
South Toowoomba Bombers AFC is ninth on the review system.
After a successful 2012 campaign, the Bombers were keen to attack 2013. With great return in numbers, as well as the inclusion of new members, the Bombers were able to sport well-rounded teams across all ages and competitions, including Reserve Grade and their inaugural Women’s Team.
The Senior A Grade side entered 2013 ready to fire after going down in the 2012 Grand Final. They came up against the very side that dealt them the loss, Toowoomba Tigers, in Round 1 and came out on top 9.20.74 to 9.8.62. From here, the Bombers boys took full flight, winning 5 out of their next 6 games. Things took a turn for the worse at this point however, as the side struggled with injuries, winning just two games out of the last 9 games, the last of which was in Round 13. The team ended the home and away season in 6th position, just one win out of the Final 5.
Alike the A Grade side, the Reserve Grade side didn’t have the success that was planned at the beginning of the season. The side struggled for numbers on a number of occasions, having to forfeit 3 out of their 8 games. Despite coming away with just one win for the season, the inclusion of any Reserve Grade side is a great testament to the club and the depth that the senior men side hold.
The Women’s side had a very different season to their other senior counterparts. Entering into the inaugural Women’s competition was a mix of ladies, ranging from those learning the rules a couple of highly skilled representative players. Between them, the Bombers were unsure of where the season would lead them, but entered the league ready for some strong competition. As the 2013 worn on, it was brought to the league’s attention that these female Bombers were the strongest competition.
The ladies soared through the season undefeated and carried the winning feeling into the Grand Final, beating opposition Lockyer Valley 8.16.63 to 1.0.6. Georgie Seaniger shone for the South Toowoomba side, being named Best and Fairest, as well as Player of the Final series.
The junior bombers also had a successful 2013.
The U16 boys had an up and down season, and although the side finished the season with more losses than wins, they found themselves in 4 position (28 points) and facing Lockyer Valley in the up and coming elimination final. The Bomber’s made it one more win to their tally, taking out the competition 17.12.114 to 5.7.37. It was now Warwick’s turn to face the mighty Bombers, unfortunately for the boys, the Redbacks were too good, running out 8.14.62 to 8.7.55 victors in the first semi-final. With some great youngsters in the junior ranks, the senior boys are on the lookout for some new recruits!
The U14 side also boasted a finals appearance in 2013. A mix-bag of games brought the Bombers some wind in their sails after some big wins in the opening rounds of the season, whilst they were given plenty to work on, suffering majority of their losses in the second half of the season. The side finished in 4th position on an admirable 35 points. They took on University in the elimination final and proved that they’d done their homework, finishing 16 points ahead of their challengers. They were then set the challenge of overcoming competition powerhouse Dalby. The side entered the game with guns blazing, but the Swans were just too good, defeating the Bombers 15.9.99 to 4.3.27.
The final competitive side for the Bombers, the U12 side, had a fantastic team list and entered 2013 as fierce opponents. A solid season saw the Bombers edging closer to the final series, and by Round 18, they had to win just 1 more game to make it into the top 5. Their opponents however, needed the win just as badly and so a grand stage was set for the finale of the home and away season. The Bombers took to the ground eager to show University just how skilful they were. Following 4 quarters of quality footy, the Bombers side fell agonisingly short, going down 4.8.32 to 5.1.31. The team finished in 6th position, they missed out on finals, but they did walk away from the season a better, more united side.
With strong numbers in their U10, U8 as well as the Auskick centres surrounding, South Toowoomba have some great talent to join the well-established club in 2014.
