The 2013 footy season may be well and truly over but boys and girls from across the region are gearing up for a massive 2014 as record numbers flock to the AFL Queensland preseason summer training program.
Co-branded with the Brisbane Lions Academy, the AFL Queensland summer training run at Queens Park see participants every Monday put through their paces with various fitness and skill based drills and activities. Ultimately, setting them up for a bigger and better 2014.
Over 130 participants had the choice of two different packs with the majority choosing the Lions Pack receiving the opportunity to tour the Gabba along with getting tips from their favourite Lions players and a three game membership.
Regional Manager Keith Webb said he was pleased with the number of participants in the program and their progress thus far.
"To have over 130 participants involved is fantastic, it shows that these boys and girls are willing to improve and just want more footy," Webb said.
"Their progress has been fantastic, at the start we said it was going to be tough at times but definitely worth the hard work," Regional Manager Webb added.
Apart of the AFLQDD preseason program, a girls only program has been included which has near 30 participants training under lights straight after the boys. Darling Downs are the first region in the State to offer a girls only preseason program, which focuses on the fun side of footy.
"It is a great outcome to have near 30 girls running around under the lights kicking the Sherrin. The main focus is to have fun and the girls are always laughing and dancing to the music that is playing," RM Webb said on the Girls preseason program.
"The music and fun is our main focus, girls put in their own song requests and if you drive past Queens Park while the program is on you'd think a football party is going on"
Phase one of Summer Training wraps up this Monday coming at Queens Park, as the participants (and staff) break for the holiday season. Phase two kicks off again Monday 20th January. For more information you can call the AFL office on 07 4632 2994.
